exhaust shims

I bought the emgo reverse cones from ebay and they came with an adaptor to fit on the angled header.

I tried to install them over the weekend and the right side (brake side) went on fine.

The left side (shifting side) doesn't fit as well.

The clamps don't seem to be getting tight enough. What can I put in between the adaptor and the header as a shim to make it fit better?

Would cutting a bit of soda can for a shim be completely moronic?

I have the same problem, but my shifting side fits tight it's the brake side that leaks. Specialty Spares sells a kit with what sounds like the same mufflers that includes a "special cnc machined reducer for a tight fit" I am planning to call tomorrow to see if it is available by itself. Here is a link to their website http://www.specialtyspares.com/thruxton.html

so no one has any ideas for what I can place between the pipe and clamp for a tight fit? Everyone's exhaust bolted up perfectly?

I know when I removed my stock mufflers to put on my Burgess mufflers I could see where Triumph used what appeared to be Red Hi Temp RTV silicone sealer. Would that work or is there too much of a gap? In the past, when I had gaps I just made some shim stock out of aluminum soda cans and that worked quite well.

the gap is too much for the sealant to fill.

Using an aliminum can cut to fit worked okay for you? I'm thinking that may be my best option.

Has always worked well and doesn't cost anything to try does it? I just use a sharp pocket knife and cut off the top and bottom. Then slice down the middle so I can lay it out flat. I cut my shims about 1 inch wide. If I need more than one to close the gap I use the high temp RTV silicon sealer between shims.

Thanks Kurt. I just needed some reassurance that I wasn't doing something catastrophically dumb by using a cut can to shim it.

This will be my saturday project.

Anyone have any luck with this? After receiving those adapter pieces in the mail and trying them with the exhaust and reducer sleeves, looks like it's going to leak like crazy. Bought some rtv sealer too. Might try the beer can thing.

Beer cans make great shims for exhausts, handle bars, etc. The aluminum is soft and conforms nicely to whatever parts you are shimming. The best part of the process is emptying them. I always keep a large supply on hand in case of an emergency. After an exhaustive study, I find that Guinness cans make the best shims.
