Ticking noise from right cylinder?

On the last two rides on my '06 Thrux, it's making a noise almost like lifter noise/valve tapping on the right cylinder. The noise typically goes away after I have a few miles on and things have fully warmed up, but it's a bit concerning as I don't remember it before. The temps have come down a bit lately, but it's not all that cold. I'm letting it warm up for a few minutes before I ride off but need to have a few miles at 40-50 mph before it quiets back down again.

The bike has a total of 1,800 miles on it and got it's last oil change September '07 at 600 miles (Triumph filter/Mobil 1) - first service.

I'm taking it in for a NYS inspection, oil change, and all-around checkout tomorrow before the warranty expires (January '09), but was hoping to get your thoughts in advance.

Let me know? I'm worried my baby might have a sticky valve but hoping I'm just overreacting.

Thanks...

Jason

It's probably nothing, aside from the fact that these air cooled engines generate more audible clicks and clacks than a contemporary water cooled engine. Sounds to me like a valve that may have more clearance between cam lobe and shim. My bike at 34,000 makes enough whirring and clicking sounds that I've come to consider it just part of the ride. BTW, the T100 sounds like a Caddy compared to my old R100GS with 116,000 miles on the clock.

However, since you're under warranty, and are concerned, here's what I'd do:
- I'd bring the noise to the attention of the dealer
- they'll probably say "it's nothing to worry about".
- have the dealer document your comment and their response on your bill so you have a record of it, just in case the noisey component (whatever it is) fails out of warranty.
At least this way, you'll have some sort of documentation showing (a) you expressed concern, (b) the dealer said the noise was not a problem.

Mine has done that in the past .From what you say (oil last changed Sept 07?) its time for an oil change!! Mine would do that when the oil got old. Ill bet ya a beer it wull stop when you change the O&F! Also you have 16000 mi w/ isnt much. She is still breaking in.

A couple of years ago, I tought my T100 had a valve problem, making a noise like : click-click-click...I called my dealer who told me to first check if the downpipe flange nuts were loose. Yes they were a little loose and I tithened all of them (do it only when engine is cold)...and the noise disappeared.

The last time I had loose flange nuts was on a rigid zed chop - a pair of tighter trousers and a visit to the doc sorted it out

Jason,

I don't think this is the cause or solution to your problem, but, you do realize you are a month overdue on your next oil change...the book says every 6000 miles or 1 year whichever comes first.

Thanks guys....got it in the shop now and they're going to listen to see if they hear anything. If nothing else, it'll be documented on the off-chance it becomes an issue.

I am a little overdue on swapping the oil and filter, so could be a fresh fill of Mobil 1 will put her in good spirits again. We'll see how she runs out when I get her back tonight.

Thanks for the feedback - much appreciated!

Dude; I know NY gets cold, but you gotta start riding that thing more. You'll be out of warranty and won't even have the engine broke in. Drop by AZ and I'll get her all broke in, in a weekend.
Hey just havin fun with you

Yeah, no kidding...what's even worse is that I was working in Canada for the last two years and only had "visitation rights" on the weekends. No more of that crap - I need to be home to ride!

On a positive note, picked up the bike after an O&F change and she's smooth as silk. I'm going to try to ride tonight since I will probably have to lay her up for winter by this weekend...yep, weather is going to crap quickly.

I hate winter.

These Bonne's have a way of telling you WHEN its time for new oil! When they talk- you listen! Glad she is back in order now. Its funny I dont even have to look- I can tell by the sound of the motor when its time. Get a good one before hibernation OR come to Fla? Were just beginning here now!!
