america stuck in 5th gear

hi

yesterday my america stucked on 5th gear - cant move lever down at all, but clutch was worked fine. i pull out bike on walk patch, and after shut down engine, gears start working. i have noticed that nut on pipe with conect gear shift lever with engine was loose. i have fixed it, and then i rided 100 miles with no problem. Question - should i concern about that situation? or is possible that nut was a problem and i nothing serious?

before i have been posted about knocking noise from clutch. peoples from 3 different garages have listen this noise and all said noise is normal. But this noise is a lot lounder now ,lounder than idle engine running, usualy on warm and hot engine , when clutch is pull in. i dont have problem with clutch other than this noise (for example i done 1200 km in 2 days and then after week another 1200km in 2days with this noise without problems at all) . more miles = noiser bike?

thanks in advice for replys.

It sounds like your gear shift linkage was loose? Sounds like you have it back together OK, just make sure you have 2 or 3 mm of play in the clutch lever on the handlebar (it should move jut a little bit before going "tight"). Make sure the gear shift linkeage is tight so it doesn't come loose again.

Sounds like everything is basically OK - I'm not very familiar with the americas, so I can't offer more than fairly generic information I'm afraid.

KaT, try useing blue LOCTITE on the pinch bolts and other fasteners to keep the shifter from vibrating loose again. I had the shift linkage vibrate loose on my Thruxton when it was new, I had to fix it on the road to get home. ---James.

Kat, How's the bike running now? I have an '07 America and it shifted like butter...very little noise. At around 3K miles it got "stuck" in 3rd gear... I got it un-stuck and drove with no problems till it happened again 1K miles later. Again... un-stuck with no problems. A 6K miles 3rd gear broke while getting on the highway. When they pulled the bike apart they said it was a faulty gear that was heating up due to friction and eventually failed. They replaced the gear up but the bike never shifted the same...always clunkly...never smooth...so they rebuilt the tranny again...same issue. Next they replaced the clutch...same issue. They told me I needed to "break it in"... 1K miles later...still very clunky...hard to downshift... had trouble getting it from Neutral to First Gear. The bike ended up in the shop for a total of 7 months However, this last time...they got it! I'm currently on a trip from Omaha NE to Sacremento CA and she shifts like butter again! ...seems when she was rebuilt they set the clutch to "factory specs"....and FINALLY they decided to go outside of those specs and WAALAA! The owners of this family run dealership admitted they never rebuilt an America Transmission before...and basically worked with Triumph Proper via phone.

Ahh well...she's running GREAT now! Transmission wise... Lesson for me is.... learn how to work on my bike more! ...BUT...that level of service is gonna wait till the warranty expires...which Triumph extended for 12 months...which now works out as I'm headed to Iraq for a year this fall.

Will see Cali today! Have a GREAT Week!

Kat,

I have a 08 BA with just over 3000 miles. I can say no sounds comes from the engine when I am moving the clutch lever in and out. I can hear a single click when changing through each gear. But the action of the gear shifter is smooth. Do you hear the sound when bike is in neutral and you move the clutch in and out without moving into a gear?
