Engine Removal/Frame Dissasembly
I've got a quick question for those who have removed their motors for case machining, frame alterations, etc.
I'm leaving out MANY steps in between, but the factory service manual recommends removing the rear swing arm, dropping the lower frame subsection from the bike (with the motor still attached to the top fore and aft mounts), and THEN lowering the motor from the bike.
My instinct says it would be easier to disconnect the top motor mounts and drop the lower frame subsection with the motor still attached, without removing the rear swing arm so the bike can still sit on two wheels. Then I could place the motor on a pallet/cradle and dismount the lower frame subsection.
How did you do it? Clearance issues with the swinging arm if I did it my way?

Doesn't the pivot shaft for the swingarm go through the engine casings? I think you have to pull the engine and then put the swingarm back in. But there may be some trick I'm not aware of.....

yea it goes through the motor but you only have to pull the bolt if your carful after you get the motor off you can put the bolt back in and move the bike around on its wheels just watch the chain.

I put my bike on the craftsman bike jack, and after taking off the seat, gas tank, exhaust, carbs, etc I removed the swingarm, rear wheel, and shocks, all in one piece (heavy as hell!!!):
Then, I unbolted the lower section of the frame, and lifted the main part of the frame right off the motor:
Sorry for the crappy cell phone pics, here's me riding my "bobbed" bike. I took a lot of weight off it, but the power to weight ratio sucked:
When I put it back together I just put the frame right back on top of the motor. Simple!

Hey Sweat,I`m thinking about making a single downtube section from the front lower motor mount upwards.If both lower rails were fixed together as a single piece,could they still be removed if I needed to,or do the 2 rails need to move outward to be removed?

The floor jack method works just fine. If you are stripping the bike down to the frame, I'd obviously would remove the front end before separating the frame.
Take lots of digital photos and bag & lable everything. If you want to pull the bottom frame rails, you can carefully roll the bare motor over upsidedown onto a shipping blanket and remove the rails.
