Front Brake Master Cylinder Leak

My new Bonneville has a slight leak from the lid of the master cylinder. The dealer took a look last friday and 're-seated' the seal, but it has continued to leak. They have now ordered a new seal. I spoke with Triumph, who claim that if the lid is tightened too much it will damage the seal and that a tech notice had gone out to the dealers to that effect.

Seems a bit lame to me. Has anyone else seen this?

TIA

I know others have seen this - so I expect someone will chip in - mine has been bone dry.

Some blame the lid for being too flimsy - and in some ways that backs up Triumphs statement - if you tighten it too much it could bow a bit and not apply even pressure to the seal.

A common misconception with rubber seals when they leak is to go tighter and tighter, often making the problem worse.

I'd let the dealer replace the seal and go from there.......

Thumbs up Leak

The master cyl on the Bonne is crap!! Its pot metal & machined very poorly! I had the samething. You can re-mill the stock cap w/some emory & a block of wood- or buy (as I did) the chrome or whatever cap you desire? I put on the chrome one & have NEVER had a leak since! It came milled as smooth as a babys ass. DONT use any sealer or whatever as that will be a problem later when you have to remove it. Besides a nice tight seal- it looks real nice! They have them in blk or many designs. There are very few that havent had some sorta leak on that POS!! Brake fluid plays hell w/ paint!! Good luck

Another tip I've always followed: just like installing an oil filer, make sure there's a bit of fluid on the seal prior to tightening it up.
