Removing Spark Plugs

dumbest question ever:

which way to loosen the sparkplugs? clockwise or counter-clockwise?

i tried to pull them last night and they are on SUPER-tight. i can't get them off without some real effort, and i don't want to accidentally strip the threads.

THANKS!

nick

btw -- the Haynes manual says "Clean around the seal on teh plug before you pull them to make sure no dirt falls into the engine..." but there's no way to get into that small space to clean around the plug. bah!!

They undo the same as a regular bolt - CCW. If you have compressed air, blow around the spark plugs before undoing them, alternatively a good shop vac will suck well enough to get the loose junk - and if you can turn your shop vac to "blow" that will do it too.

Nick, your question made me smile, but I applaud your "better safe than sorry" approach and the humility it takes to ask. You will become a better mechanic for it.

Is that a political remark?

People, however, are a different matter. Dumb people can be found in abundance!

There are no dumb questions, mate. If it's important enough to YOU to ask, it's important enough to answer.

Better to ask than to blindly go on and really screw something up.

I like to put a dab of anti-seize on the new plugs when I put them in.

Righty-tighty Lefty-loosey is correct.
