Stage 1 Is Done - What Next ?

Hi Guys,

I've fitted free breathing pipes to the Black Bonnie and she sounds great and goes pretty well.

For stage 2 I intend to remove the snorkel. fit K&N Filters and a dyno-jet kit.

I expect some improvement, but I don't think it will be enough.

I've looked at fitting new carbies, cams, heads and the 904 big bore kit.

Can anyone tell me which is the best option for stage 3 and maybe then 4. I'll just do the mods until I reach a stage where I'm happy rather than going for a full race engine.

I like the sounds of the 904 kit if everything else stays the same.

Hop up the engine that you transplant out of one of the new T-bird twinns that are coming out, then you will finally have enough power.
Stage#? Heaven!!!

You don't have the year of your bike posted. If it is a 790 engine, I would recommend you get rid of the airbox and jet it properly for the next step (I also recommend getting it on a dyno to insure proper jetting). You may find that you don't need more RWHP--I don't. Also, remember that as you get the rear wheel HP above 70 HP, you will find the brakes woefully inadequate, the suspension needing lots of work, etc. In other words, don't put all your budget into the engine! The rest of the bike needs changes once you up the HP a lot, IMHO.

first off dont do stage 2 get rid of the air box and other mods later will make you do it anyway. After the air box i think carbs should be your next step.I like the 42mm mikunis but the 39 fcrs are prob. alot better then stock. You need to plan out your motor mods so everything works together later down the road and you dont have to buy but once.As far as brakes go you will want better brakes later but you can wait.Mine stops ok with stock brakes if i dont try to be a road racer or something stupid.Corse i am a old fart i use to ride kaw h2 2 strokes and our bikes stop alot better then they did.I am a old drag racer I dont do as much peg dragging as some. There are people that come in here that have been faster on these bikes then me ,but i have been faster then most on mine.
Be careful with mods there like drugs you might wake up one day and have $5000 or $10,000 in your motor dont ask me how i know lol.

Just exhaust is Stage 1? Just exhaust is Stage EPA-hates-me.

I always thought that Stage 1 was all 'breathing'. Not complete until both the intake and the exhaust is completely un-restricted save for at the tuner's discretion.

Stage 2 is fuelling. In this case, the carburettors. A rack of 39mm FCRs would serve your engine quite nicely and provide a hellacious mid-range. (I fitted a set of FCR's to my Ducati 900SS and went from proper-quick to wheelie-ing in the first four gears.) At this point, you'll also want to take a look at the ignition system to make sure you're completely and efficiently burning the fuel that's going into the combustion chambers.

Stage 3 is motor. It's here where you get to make the real fun choices. Big bore-short stroke for high-revs? Longer stroke for more torque? Aggressive cams or mild? High compression pistons? High-flow heads. This is around where street-ability starts to die off as the amount of power begins to overwhelm reliability and the engine becomes mighty but finicky.

Stage 4 is when you're basically building an all-new engine. Nothing is defined here. It's not cheap, but you'll already know this if you've even gotten to this point.
