Drag pipe baffles?

I'm considering hacking off my midpipes just past the bend before the mufflers and installing drag pipe baffles. I like the way my bike looks without mufflers, and it annoys me that I have to remove one of my mufflers every time I have to adjust the chain.

My bike is VERY LOUD without mufflers, so I'm wondering if anybody here can tell me how much a set of baffles will quiet it down. I like a good bit of noise, but I also like to keep the fillings in my teeth!

I'm also wondering if they'll give it enough back pressure to keep the bike running right.

Does anybody here have any experience with this sort of thing?

Oh, and another question - are Bonneville pipes 1 3/4" or 1 1/2"?

Which baffles? I'm thinking about getting the 12" x 1 1/2" baffles from JC Whitney. I'm hoping the length will help keep the sound down to a reasonable level.

I have a pair of the 4"x1.5" baffles from J.C. Whitney that I use on occasion in the tailpipes of my Norman Hyde Classic (Toga) mufflers/silencers. They are quite effective at reducing the noise volume and the low frequency resonance. My guess would be a 20% reduction in sound that I've experienced, so you may want to try the 12" baffles and cut off an inch or two at a time if you want them louder. I had to make sleeves from 1.5" OD tubing to fit the baffles into so they would fit into my tailpipes. The baffles are made for 1.5" OD pipes so they are actually smaller than 1.5" OD. I think the Bonneville pipes are 1.5" OD so you should be OK.

Hated,
What exactly are "thumbscrews" are they a brand name of baffles? I know what a thumbscrew is but not sure if that is what you meant.
