neutral light wont go out

After changing my sprockets and chain, the neutral light stays on all the time. I though at first I might have dislodged a connector or wire somewhere when ratchet strapping the bike to my bike lift, but I cannot see anything obvious.

The bike runs fine, shifts properly, but the light stays green all the time. Where do I begin to look?

Check sprocket cover

On the older models such as yours (and mine) the wire from the neutral switch runs upwards past the right hand edge of the sprocket cover and consequently it is very easy to trap the thin wire from the neutral switch under the edge of the cover when replacing it.
Remove the cover and follow the routing of the wire from the switch and if it has been squashed repair it as necessary and replace the cover properly.
Most likely the insulation has been damaged but a bit of tape or better yet some heat shrink will fix it.

The wire coming from the neutral light to the neutral switch is a hot wire.
So wooly is right on , the wire is shorting out some where.
Or the neutral switch is stuck in the closed position.

Yep - happened to me too. After I had taken off the sprocket cover , but it took 3 weeks before the fault appeared. I had just nicked the neutral lead going down to the switch.
Cover off , found offending fault- and repaired with a generous helping of insulating tape. Problem is as the wire is black and at the back of the sprocket cover , you can't really see it until you take off the cover.
Fault also allows you to select gear and drive off with the side stand down.
I will eat my hat if this ain't the problem
