Brake pads too close together

I just replaced the fork springs on my bonnie and installed gaiters. Now, I'm putting things back together and find that I can't put the brake unit back because the break pads are now too close together so the brake disc won't fit between them. I tried pushing them apart, but they're still not far enough apart.

Any advice?

Thanks for any help.

Crack the bleeder nipple and try to push them apart again. You may get some air in the caliper and have to bleed the system when you are done.

Some people are like Slinkies. They're really good for nothing. But they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs.

take the cap off the brake fluid reservoir, then push the brake pads apart with a big flat head screwdriver.

No bleeding will be necessary, the lever might be a little soft at first, but pump it a few times and it will firm right back up (this is with the cap back on, of course).

Problem solved. I removed the cap and was easily able to pry apart the pads. The bike is all back together. I just need to buy an adapter so I can use my 3/8 inch torque wrench with 1/2 inch sockets. With every step of this process, I have to buy another tool.

Thanks everyone.

that's ok, it's better to buy them as you need them (and use them) than to go buy every tool under the sun and never put your hands on them.

congrats on the job well-done!

That is how you get "free" tools. The money you saved from paying someone else bought you the tools.
