Increasing capacity of an EFI tank

Crazy idea here but bear with me. I have an 08 Scrambler, EFI tank but carbed bike. I noticed the empty space under the tank where the pump would go on an injected bike is pretty large. What I am wondering is if it would be possible or worth while to have someone with more fabbing/welding experience than I enlarge this part of the tank so it's closer to the frame tube, increasing it's capacity.

My commute is 140 miles and I'll be doing long trips on this bike as it replaced my F650GS so every little bit counts, if I could squeeze an extra 20 miles out of a tank it would be worth it to me.

There is a ton of room between the tank and the top tube, so I'm sure a creative welder could add some capacity to your standard tank. It would definately be a cool project.

If you're only looking for 20 more miles, maybe you could have someone braze in fittings for a cross-over. As I'm sure you're aware, our tanks have none, and leave unusable gas "stranded" on the right hand side of the tank.

Whatever you do, post pictures. Good luck!

Mee too. My F650GS was just 'totalled' by a van driver who ran in the back of me. I've just bought a carb'd Black although am still using the loan bike. My GS would do 300 to a tank if driven carefully, and I always got 3 days commuting from a tank (about 270 miles). Pretty darned good. I couldn't find anything to match it in that respect so went for a Bonneville (my second) as everything else meets ny requirements perfectly.

I'd like to think I could get two days from a tank - 180 miles - the way I ride, that is very gently. We'll see.

Easiest and probably cheapest way to increase capacity over EFI is to get a (used)carb tank.
Not being funny but welding tanks is a time consuming business and time as they say is money. Still wont get much over 125 miles before reserve, look for the threads on that subject. A cross over pipe would be a great mod, let us know.

Why did a carbed bike come with an EFI tank in the first place? I have an '08 Bonnie - which tank came with my bike?
