I did the airbox before I did the exhaust...basically because one came 2 weeks before the other. With the stock pipes, you can hear a touch more induction noise if you listen real hard or imagine it. The K&N cone filters do a very good job of muffling the intake noise. I had FCR 39s on the bike already. I didn't spent too much time playing with them since I knew the exhaust was coming, but the setup was running sickeningly rich.
When the Zard arrived, I put it on and things leaned right out (more air flow I assume, even for a given rpm). So in answer to your question, I think airbox removal alone does virtually nothing, you need a free flow exhaust.
The Zard is actually not bad now that I added a baffle tube. Biggest bonus is it's 18 kg lighter than the stock exhaust. The airbox is another 3 kg, so that's 21 kg less moving around with me. That's more than a 10% weight reduction if you are counting. Remove the sprocket cover and the rear fender, and thats another 3.5 kg. Air injection is another 750 g. Closing in on 15% weight reduction now. Add that to the increase hp/torque and you can have an awful lot of fun.
