988 kit experience

I am considering going full stage three on my 08 T100. New Bonneville has a 988 kit. I am wondering if anyone has installed one and what was their experience with it. The one thing that slows me down is that the old Turner 500s were sweet little machines, dependable and even somewhat smooth. When Triumph went to 650ccs, that all changed. The T100s mirrors at ninety look like the bike is parked. I wouldn't want to lose that, but I would like to be able to putt along in low gear without having to slip the clutch (I know, it might be easier to drop a tooth on the motor sprocket). In any case, I already have this image in my head of the bike sitting there in my shop, this winter, torn down to the cases, fretting over when the **** jugs are going to be back. . .

There's a bunch of positive responses on the mod. Mikeinva did it for sure with great success. The new Bonnies are well overengineered so they can take the additional stress. There is a link here that may be of interest

I haven't done it, but it's cool looking at what other people have done.

Whatever you decide - good luck!

Thanks Propforward.

That was what I was looking for. I did some searches on 988 and different combinations but didn't come up with anything. I was leary about restarting a thread on something that might have been beat to death.

It doesn't hurt to revisit things - new info comes to light and so on. Thrux-ton-up and Mikeinva will certainly be good resources for this project. Might want to do a search on threads they have started.

Bring $$$. I think Mike said it cost him $3-4k by the time it was all said and done, but he did a lot of headwork also.

Every thing you need will be a little over $3000.00 for the 989 kit.Thats not doing any head work .You might want to call bill gately at bp .He has kits in stock you send him your crank and jugs and he will send you back what you need. His kit comes with a balanced stroked crank that lets you get rid of the balance shafts(8 pounds of junk ) with out them it revs alot quicker .Allso you get good rods that will take high rpm .

Bill Gately at bp ? ? ?

I would imagine that the balanced crank eliminates the necessity of the balance shafts, right? Above all I don't want to spend three or four thousand dollars and create a 1968 Super Rocket vibrator.

Any idea on who might be tapped for the head work? I had a Cosworth head on my SuperIII that made all the difference in the T3 motor. I might do that (headwork) first before diving off into the whole 9 yards.

I knew it wouldn't be cheap. Nothing is that is done right.

Thanks for the info.

Best regards,

Ted

The only place you will feel any more vibs is at idle mine is smoother at 4000rpm then it was with the shafts.kinda neat at stop lights lets people know its not stock its kinda like a HD at stop light but soon as you give it the gas its smoooth.Head work is high no mater who you get to do it.plan on $1200. to 2000. depending on how much you get done.big valves ,seats port work and so on.You should allso have some big carbs to feed the beast.42mm work good.BP can hook you up with all that stuff. There is alot more to the stroker motors then the $500. piston kit like nb has on there web sight.Ithink if i add everything up on mine with pipes carbs and so on I got close to $7000. in hp mods.give or take $500. i only paid $5000.00 for the bike .I must be nuts but it sure is fun.

Nuts? Nope, don't think so. A true performance bike (Ducati - Aprilla - even the new RS BMW) run $20K plus. I had a Ducati 918 when they first came out. Was it fast? You bet, scary fast. Was it fun to ride? Not for me, it was more like painful. I had a Super III also. Fast? Yes, fun? Well, less painful than the Duc, and I did have some fun tuning it, but it was still more like, climb aboard, hang on and pray.

I enjoy riding the Bonnie and even with Stage I improvements it scoots pretty good. I think I will get a lot of pleasure out of making incremental changes, enjoy the improvements and then take the next step. The neat thing is when you finish, it is yours, unique, and you won't see thirty more just like it between stop lights.

Thanks for your suggestions and advise.

Ted
