Oil weight to suppress top end noise?

Hi Lads,
I just finished doing the second oil change on my 06 Scrambler using an OEM filter and Kawasaki S4 full synthetic 10w40.(the manual suggests 10w40).My question is...if I decided to go with a heavier weight synthetic like 15w50 or 20w50,will the engine run a little quieter.I realize that the Scrambler engine top end noise is mostly due to its design, but will a thicker oil cushion things a little?

Thumbs up Oil Weight

I use 20/50 & it does help the top end noise a bit. Tried many brands & viscositys & found 20/50 to be rite on. Just make sure to warm up in the winter! If you ride in 20 deg or less- can be harder to start as well. Over all- it works great!!

I agree. I use a little space heater to warm the engine for 15 or 20 minutes when it's really cold in the winter (of course really cold is a relative assessment). I'm on a test run right now with a fill-up of Rotella and I'm not really that crazy about it so I'm going too bite the bullet and lay down the cash for 4 qts of Amsoil 20W50 and put the engine back like I had it.

I use 15w50 down here in the hot country. If I was as far North as you are, I would use the 10w40. Loud pipes take care of the valve train noise for me.

Hi.
I'm no mechanic but my understanding is that most of your engine wear happens at start up so 10/40w as recommended should be adhered to, especially in cold weather. Use ear plugs for the rattle or listen to an older guzzi that'll stop you complaining.

I'd have second thoughts about 20W50 in Ottawa.

+1 on that one Balto!! I might extend that as far as Vermont or further south ? Its good hot weather oil tho. Up north I might do a summer/ winter thing? I just started doing a before summer- after this year. Same oil just oil takes a beating here in the summer, so I deccided to do it 2x/ yr. Used to do only 1x which worked OK, but didnt like the look of what came out. Hell its only $30 & its my baby!! Rode tonight after 2 weeks, & 1 click & off she went!!The rain has been hell lately! I made it 3 mi & got soaked! @ least I got to take her out!! This battery is amazing me! Itll sit for a month & start up like day 1!! In Ottawa I might use Castrol 10/40 dino or semi & change every 1000 mi? Not anoption here!!

10/40 yes - but it will still be best to use fully synth. When it gets to the super freakin' cold levels, put it away! Too much ice and snow around at that point - where's the fun in that? I've been riding in the snow and ice before. Not any more thankyou.
