Different type of knock problem

Hi guys. I got a 2001 Std. Bonnie with an annoying problem. When the engine is not fully warmed-up, I get a kinda of engine "kick". It only happens at idle, sometimes as often as 7-8 times a min. The best way I can describe it imagine a fan running at a medium speed, take a stick and hit the blades once, the fan immediately slows then goes back to it's orig. rpm. The kick can be seen in the carbs, they actually jolt to one side when it happens. When the engine is off-idle, no problems at all. Sometimes if it happens several times quickly in a row the engine stalls.

Is it gas quality (lack of)? Is it a misfire? Is it a classic knock? It's definitely not pinging. Is it fixed by installing better coils (Nology)?

Thanks!

Sounds like a fuel mixture issue causing a backfire..... go for run warm the bike up then pull one of the spark plugs....if its all black and sooty you are probably running too rich...
Might be worth checking all the rubber boots on the carbs to make sure they are all airtight....with no splits...
regards
AK

Thanks! I'll try it. We'll see what happens.

What effect does the choke have on your symptoms?

Thumbs up Knock

It doesnt sound like a knock but more of a poop? +1 on what it does w/ the choke on??
It may be a lean backfire w/choke off (had them when I off the choke prematurely) ?
Whatever it is - it doesnt sound serious! If she runs rite on when warm- not to worry!!
My Bonne will do some strange things 1x every so often. Its the nature of the beast!
I guess thats what makes a Bonne a Bonne? Still gotta love em!! Much better than my 65!!!

If I pull the choke any amount to increase rpm, it won't do it. The choke is really an enricher, so using logic, am I too lean?

Kick

Itīs running lean. Open the idle mixture screw 1/2 turn on both carbs. This helped mine 2004 Bonne to run smooth idle when cold.

Mine does this too. Even when warm. A clanky single sputter like a stick in a fan where the rpm dips and then restores (though not always to its original rpm). Happens only at idle. Today for the first time, the bike actually stopped at a light. Fired right back up and was fine.

I have FCR39s on mine. My fuel screws are 2.5 turns in (i.e. to the lean side of) from the point where the idle rpm begins to drop from being overly rich. This is 1.5 turns from seated, which doesn't mean a whole lot if you have different carbs and jets etc. When the fuel screws are seated I'm just past maximum idle rpm. Bike runs flawlessly otherwise. Can do a wheelie with this setup.

Any ideas ? If I go richer, the bike seems to bog when cold. Not sure why. Should run leaner when cold and I have no choke.

Beginning to suspect an electrical issue. Only seems to happen when the rpm is below 1000. It's a miss, just like you get when a spark plug lead is lose. I have brand new plugs as of yesterday and Nology wires, but stock ignition module. Just playing with my idle speed seems to be able to get it to sputter or quit.
