Scrambler intermittent ignition problem/cutting out

I have a '06 Scrambler that has an intermittant ignition problem.
It seems to only happen when it's hot.
Usually what happens is it will just quit when cruising, just as if you have hit the kill switch. Sometimes it will misfire and backfire, then quit or it just goes dead.
It will restart if I pull in the clutch and hit the starter whilst coasting or by just letting the clutch out.
It will also quit dead when pulling away from an intersection. It always restarts instantly whilst rolling and may quit again in a few seconds, minutes or not for another hour.
It's definately ignition or lack of power to the ignition.
From what I can make out there is not a total loss of power as the oil light does come on when it quits and the turn signal stay on if they are on at the time.
I have checked all connections and for water in the ignition switch.
It is now out of warranty and would be hard to diagnose as it is intermittant.
Any help would be appreciated.

not shure about scramblers but if it was a bonnie sounds like it could be that rotten pick up coil that fails eventually in a very high percentage of our bikes, iam even thinking of carrying one as a spare because as shure as night follows day that piece of junk will fail it has on two of my riding buddies bikes so far( stupid manufacturers putting troublesome junk into there bikes year after year has to make you wonder).

Failing when warm sounds electrical as does the misfire/backfire. Like RonD said could be the pickup coil or hopefully not the ignitor. I had a coil go bad on my Bonnie but when it went out it was out, not after warming up. Pickup coils are pretty cheap I think around $60.

Seems like the usual suspects are pickup coil, coil, ignitor. Triumph buys the crap from Gill/England and this stuff has been an issue since the Thunderbirds (mostly coils) but for some reason they continue to use the stuff.

Thankyou for your responses.
Next question would be...............Where is the pick up coil and how easy is it to replace?
Is the ignitor the little black box under the seat?
I'm guessing the ignitor is a little priceyer. Would that be an intermittant problem or would it just fair altogether.
Many Thanks,
Mark

You would have to remove the alternator cover and probably need a new gasket.

I found this on http://www.bonnevilleamerica.com/for...0&fpart=3&vc=1.

This seems to have come from Triumph.

"Affected Models: Bonneville/T100, America, Speedmaster, Thruxton and Scrambler.
Should a bike (see above) demonstrate faulty ignition coil type symptoms (most commonly an engine misfire), please initially check and adjust the ignition pick-up (IPU) air gap (we recommend an air gap of 0.8mm).
Since changing the IPU air gap in production to 0.8mm, we have had no ignition coil warranty claims."

That little black doohickey (officially the ignition sensor) upper left. Note: I have not done this procedure so maybe someone that has can offer you some better info.

a friend had the same problem, and all it was, was a loose
connection on the spark coils. He changed the connectors
with new ones and everything is OK.

Do you do any off-road riding on your Scrambler? Do you ride on any rough roads? On the Hinkley twins the sparkplug wires can shake themselves off the igniton coils. I had the same issue as yourself with my Speedmaster, and found one of my coil wires ready to fall completely off the coil, and the other one was loose. I just put the wires back into the coils, then used zip-ties to secure them. No problems since.

I've reset the gap on both of mine and it definitely requires a new gasket. Thankfully, you can do it while the bike is on the sidestand and only lose a tablespoon or so of oil so an oil change/drain is not required. It's as easy as taking the bolts out of the side cover and carefully prying it off; the alternator magnet is fairly strong so keep a good grip. Cover the header pipe with a rag to catch the tiny amount of oil that's going to dribble out. Once you replace the coil set the gap to 0.8mm and clean the old gasket off (and I do mean squeaky clean) a couple of dabs of RTV will hold the coil and stator grommets in place while you replace the cover.

You could get lucky, the gap could just be way out and you only need a $6 gasket instead of the $68 coil.
