Catalytic Convertor?

This is an off-shoot of the Exhaust Thread currently underway. In doing research for that thread, I stumbled upon something interesting... I think.

According to Jenks Bolts, our new Bonneville's have an Oxidative Catalyst installed in the silencers.

According to BikeBandit, Bonneville with a serial number (last 6 numbers of the VIN) of 241569 or less do not, while those with serial numbers of 241570 and higher do.

Look at Silencers in the BikeBandit Catalog below. They specifically list a cat for these serial numbers, and charge an extra USD$30.00 for it. Other countries as well.

http://www.bikebandit.com/houseofmot...E-T100/o/m6887

Is this correct? If so... interesting. I would assume then if you were to disable the Air Injection, and have a Oxidative catalyst in your silencer... this is probably not good? Well, not good for the catalyst anyway.

Can anyone confirm this?

well that tells why the efi didnt help the new bikes much.Looks like old headers good mufflers and a remap and i bet they will run better.

i'm going to go ahead and recommend people cut those off and run exhaust in the more pure form.

i'm sure the power gained from this will be well worth it. it's a shame to see that stuff on a motorcycle.

666 and Mikeinva,

The worry might also be that the Air Injection system is designed to burn off the last of any raw gases. That said, if the AI has been disabled, you would be (possibly be) allowing raw gas into the convertor, and eventual - slowly but surley - damaging it and clogging it up.

I agree, if you have one of the serial # bikes noted above, think about this, and look into getting rid of the cat (if legal in your area, etc., etc.). Trouble is though, I believe it is INSIDE the peashooter, so not so easy to cut out... or is it?

Apologies to the Green Groups out there, but is nothing sacred!

Not trying to cause a panic here, but just a yellow flag? Thanks guys.

it may not be legal, but sometimes you gotta fight the power.

as long as i see busted ass 25 year old cars pumping more smoke than the industrial revolution, i'm gonna not worry about my bike's emissions. no smoke, no fire.

Angry Cat & removal

It looks like if you are gonna dx any part of the emmission system- gotta ditch it all!
That way w/ cars so not a suprise! I guess now we can expect cats on our lawnmowers ?
God a cat on a weed wacker would out weigh the wacker!! Amazing how we sheep can be led into believing cats put out better exhaust? Love to have been behind that patent when the Govt started req them!! Someone made a bundle!! Cat exhaust & water= sulfuric acid!
A well maintained EFI vehicle minus cat will put out cleaner exhaust. When gas hits $10+/ gal who the hell is gonna care- cant afford to drive!

In the "Bad News" dept.: Looks like the Greenies and Limp Wristed Liberals are already gearing up...

http://www.projo.com/news/environmen...6.252bfa3.html

Be prepared for the big SUV/Hummer advocates to have this type of info in their back pockets for rebuttals.

All the while, China, India and other profit minded countries massively pollute at will while we covet and slobber over their cheap goods.

What to do...
