Crankcase breather hose

So after about a 8 hour trip, I noticed what appeared to be oil\sludge sprayed on my left exhaust, the rear side of the frame by the tire, and some parts beneath the left side panel cover. Some was still dripping off. I took off the cover and traced the source, and it seems to have come from where the crankcase breather hose had apparently popped off from where it was supposed to be attached (near the snorkel). Knowing nothing about bikes, but enough to figure out that the hose should have been attached, I managed to re-attach it and it stayed put.

I don't know how long it had been like this, but I assume there may have been at least an hour or more with the hose un-attached. Anyone know what this hose is for and why it would cause oil to spray all over everthing? If its just a breather hose, what are the ramifications of driving with it un-attached?
thanks

Thumbs up Hose

It allows the fumes in the crankcaase to be sucked into theairbox & burned. Some oil does get in there @ times & unhooked, it probably allowed a fair amount to get sprayed on your bike. Besides the mess- no harm was done to the bike. There is supposedly a little spinner/ slinger in the engine to keep oil from getting the airbox but it doesnt always work that good! If it pops off again- clamp it!

You have a 2001

This was apparently a problem on the early New Bonnevilles, fixed later by altering some engine internals so not so much oil would blow out.

No problems riding without the hose for a while. There is a little pressure from the case so your not sucking road debris into the case without it. Only concern would be if you were riding in rain.

Seeing a little oil from the breather isn't a problem. The centrifugal breather was removed in 2005. I've had two replaced, but it never fails for most owners. In my case it put a lot of oil to the breather box. After the first failure, I installed a longer breather hose and ran it vertically which kept most of the oil in the case during the second failure.
