Will OEM shocks from Kawasaki, etc. fit on a Bonneville?

When I had an SV650, I was able to save a ton of money on the rear shock by installing a takeoff from a GSXR 1000. I think it was less than $50 on Ebay. $500 is just too much for me to spend right now, but the stock Bonnie shocks are absolute garbage and need to go. I don't necessarily need full adjustability (for now, anyway), I just want a cost effective way to improve the suspension to a reasonable degree.

Which brings me to the question....

Are there any quality (at least relative to the stock Bonnie shocks) OEM shocks that will bolt right on to the Bonneville? For example, will a Kawasaki zrx1200 shock fit? Honda nighthawk? If so, which one is best for a 210lb rider?

The short answer is "yes, but...". The ZRX shocks are about 1/8" longer than the stock Thruxton shocks and work well on my Thruxton. The Bonnie shocks are shorter than the Thruxton shocks. Depending on era, the Nighthawk shocks probably aren't any better than the stock Bonnie shocks (at least the ones on my old '91 NH weren't). A search for "ZRX or zrex shock" should give you a bunch of info, including some comments about modifying the ZRX shock to give less preload/more static sag. Also, don't forget about upgrading the front end to match the stiffer and more controlled rear end. HTH,

Rob

Exclamation Yes you can!!!!

I have the KYB Kawa ZRX shocks on my Bonnie. I also did the Works Performance dual rate front spring kit. The back end is raised; and I plan to lower the front just a bit as well. Although I am still trying to finalize the infinite adjustments, it has made a HUGE and preferable diffference in the way the bike rides and handles. You do have to swap out either the upper or lower bushings ( I NEVER remember which).

Bob's yer Uncle.

Cheers,

SK
