America Carbs

I just joined this forum. Hey everyone. I purchased a new 2008 america. The dealer told me if I wanted to change the pipes it would have to be jetted. The dealer I'm using now (closer to home) told me I would'nt have to. I purchased the long silencers to replace the stock pipes. I didn't notice it before, but now I do. Sometimes when I use the choke to crank it, it'll pop. When I'm at low speed shifting sometimes it'll "spit" or pop. Is this caused by a lean condition? If so where is the mixture screws on the carburators located and can I adjust these myself. Or do I need to rejet it. Any help would be appreciated.

Generally whenever you change the pipes you need to rejet. I am in California with strict emission standards so any bike purchased new needs rejetting. The popping noise is typical of an over lean condition. Here in California we need to richen the idle mixture as well. there is a separate seb site www.triumphamerica.com or is it .net. The guys there will tell you what you need and how to go about it.

america carbs

Sorry it took so long for me to get back to you. Thanks for writing back. I called the dealership today and they told me the same thing you told me and what I thought I already knew. Why they didn't jet it the day they installed the pipes I don't know. Probably a way to make some more money. I imagine I need to purchase a tech manual. I'm going to take it in Monday and I'll let you know what happens and how it runs if you're interested. If I don't write back immediately, I will get in touch. Again thanks

The rule of thumb is; when you do two or more performance upgrades you need to rejet, otherwise it is not necessary. This is not to say that there is no value in it, but that it's just not necesary. Highflow pipes would be considered one upgarde. Pipes and airbox elimination would be considered two upgrades. AI removal is not a performance upgrade. New handlebars are not a performance upgrade either

Find another dealer who actually knows what they are talking about.
I installed long TORs on my stock America and was told by Triumph of America that "it has plenty of jetting as it is." WRONG! The dang thing wouldn't even do 80MPH downhill with a tailwind!
You DO need to rejet if you "upgrade" exhausts.

There are so many variables in carbs that we could all be wrong.

Check out

www.dinqua.com

for the jenks jetting calculator and play around.

Can you adjust the mixture on these carbs without re-jetting?

Easiest: you can turn the mixture screw on the bottom (front) of each carb using the D-tool available from new speedmaster. That will richen up the idle circuit, which controls the first quarter of throttle position.

Slightly more involved: You can also put a shim (really small washer) under the stock needles, which will richen up the throttle mixture from 1/4 to 3/4. To do that you take off the gas tank and take off the screws on top of the carbs (4 on each) pull the diaphram, slide and spring out and pull the needle out and stick the shim in a re-assemble. It's not as hard as it sounds.

Kind of a PITA: The main jet can be accessed by pulling off the float bowls and unscrewing it with a screwdriver. Pulling the float bowls is a PITA, but worth doing to replace the jets. Be sure to get the replacement allen bolts for the carbs from new speedmaster. If you are running the stock airbox on an america and TORs, I'd start with a #125 main jet (#130 if you have bubs or other aftermarket).

jetting

Hey Gilligan, I'll probably end of buying a service manual for the bike. What makes me mad is the fact that they should have done the thing right the first time. Now I don't really trust them. If I hear one pop though, I'll take it 150mi to the only other triumph shop and write triumph a letter and complain about the dealership.

Don't be too hard on your dealer. Since they are a new vehicle retailer, thay are probably not legally supposed to re-jet your carbs for you since that will affect the bike's emissions. My bike came from the dealer with TORs and stock jetting and ran pretty well as delivered. I decided to follow other peoples lead and take off the snorkle and put in a unit filter. At that point it needed to be re-jetted. I started reading the Dinqua Site and the Triumphant article about shimming the carb needles and after some trial and error came up with a good jetting combo. As someone said above, one mod usually doesn't require rejetting because the either the pipe or intake is still effectively limiting air-flow. Once you put a pipe on and modify the airbox, then you are flowing more air and you need more fuel to match it.
