popping when decelerating

So I went to florida for two weeks and when I got back, I started riding the bonnie around as usual. I've taken it to work for the past 3 days since I've been back and since then when I let off the gas and start slowing down(I let the engine slow the bike down for a little bit before hopping on the clutch and brakes) I hear mild popping sounds. Tonight on my way home from work, when I was leaving the parking lot and came to a stop sign and started slowing, I heard a somewhat "loud" pop that sounded like a back fire. The poping is coming from down low. It usually sounds like it is coming from underneath the engine, but the "loud" pop I had tonight sounded like it was coming from right in front of the exhaust cans.

Whats going on here? before I left, I didn't have this problem. I initially thought it may have been a lower grade gas that I put in causing detonation, but the only time I've put 87 in was the first time and since then I make sure I put 93. i then thought it was the fact that it sat for two weeks, but that doesn't seem like it would be that big of a problem. The third thing that comes to mind as I write this is: could it be my riding style? As in going WOT in 3/4/5 gears from a slower speed causing more unburnt fuel to be going through to the exhaust?

Any thoughts?

It wont be your riding style, thats for sure.
The popping could be a number of things but one to check is that you have no exhaust leaks (loose connections or bolts, cracks etc).
A little bit of lean popping wont do any harm, and it'll help to get you noticed!!

You may have an exhaust leak at the header / muffler connection letting in air that is igniting causing a backfire. I'd check the whole system for leaks, but I think the poppong is kinda cool. The older Triumphs and Nortons did it as a matter of course.
Don't waste your money on the high test fuel. These bikes are designed to run on 87, and do it very well.

Popping

Question: Is your AI still connected?? If it is -that could be your problem? The valve could be malfunctioning. Still there- takeit off- problem solved!

Your running lean.
increase your idle jets, but first remove the air injectors.

What kind of pipes do you have? Open pipes will undoubtedly give you popping on decel and the occasional backfire. Mine pops\growls\backfires most of the time when i decel. I've come to really like it, especially after seeing some nice older bikes around town doing the same

But I've been tuned up, went from being a bit lean to a bit rich, still pops just the same. Just a part of having open pipes. If your bikes stock, i'm not sure....haven't heard too many people with stock bikes mention popping.....

A few weeks ago I had to have a new rear tyre fitted, that meant I had to remove the exhausts. At the time I thought it odd that the joints to the down pipes had some old silicon on them.

Today I've just bee giving the bike a service, carbs balance, mixture check etc. As a part of this I noticed a small amount of popping on the exhaust, no helmet on!

Checking thought I found a tiny little leak (blowing) on both the joints. Off they came and a smear of silicon on the joints and they are gas tight again and no popping

Exclamation Popping

I get a nice burble when I run her up to top R's & back down. No "Pop" just a nice burble down! I also have an exhaust leak from when I had the rear tire replaced. Minor- streaks on the chrome but NO popping! Somethings not quite rite?

May the Farts Be With You

If indeed there are no underlining mechanical issues, enjoy the rumbles. From what I've read elsewhere, it's a normal turn of events for a well tuned bike. And like has been said, it gets you noticed.

Want to hear some popping on decel?

Here's some popping on decel for ya! This is my buddy's 2001 790cc Bonnie equipped with TORs, doing a 'drive by' on a deserted road in New Mexico. This bike ran like a champ from day one, until it was sold a month or so ago, with over 25K on the odometer. This bike always got in the high 40s (47-48mpg) even loaded down for our cross country trip.
