NEED HELP with drag specialties aftermarket tach

Finally got the tach via ups, hooked it up as per Ls1's direction sheet and it does not work.
When you turn ignition on, it lights up, when you bump over to starter, the needle flickers and when engine starts it goes totally dead, no lights no needle.
Im dealing with an 07 bonneville.
Tried using the instructions that came with it, hooked up the green wire(tach signal) to the negative terminal of the coil, still no go.
Tried hooking up the red/blue wirer to the headlight low beam and still not working...
If anyone out there has an 07 with this mod please let me know how you did it.
I'll search the threads while waiting for an answer...
Thanks Guys...
Bill

Bill,

LS1's install directions look better than mine - but I'm not a wiring guy. Possibly something different on the '07... guess we'll find out.

Meanwhile, some threads with specific info that might be helpful to cross reference:

success installing tach

Well, by golly....
I went back at it this morning and finally got it installed correctly.

Here are some points to consider.

1. LS1's instructions are wonderful and work well up to a point.
What I found was that the square plastic connector you have
to deal with by using a paper clip to spring the contacts out
is VERY easy to screw up, it took many tries to release the
connectors and in one case I buggered it up so bad it will
never work again, the plastic is VERY soft and easily distorted.

2. Using LS1's method in regards to the connector puts all the
contacts within close proximity and the chance of a short (I
am almost sure happened in my case) or an insufficient ground
(again almost sure this was the case in my installation)

3. By reading this url:
http://www.sonofthewind.net/Son%20Of...n%20Manual.pdf

You will get a good idea of how it goes. I liked these directions
with the pictures from bonnevillebilly:

http://www.triumphrat.net/triumph-tw...it-wiring.html

The best thing about bonnybilly's install was clipping the red
wire at the connector and attaching the green wire from the
tach to that. If you don't have shrink tubing, cut a large gauge
#10 wire (hint: use #10 or 14 house wire), and pull the
wire out of the insulator and pull that piece over the green
wire and solder, then pull the insulator over the joint, wrap with
tape and you are good to go. This is the method I used the
second time around.
What I didn't like about billys installation was soldering directly
to the parking light black connector. It looked like he had melted
the plastic to access the connectors. It is much neater to use
this method: http://www.triumphrat.net/memberalbu...t/ppuser/11993

To identify the parking light leads positive and negative then
strip back and solder the red/blue leads to positive and the black
ground wire to the negative and wrap with black electric tape.
And yes, the parking light is on at all times when engine is
running.

4. I did use LS1's method of installing the three way mini plug
that he provides with the D9 bracket,
this is nice and clean, looks good and works just fine. In that
case, you solder the red/blue wires on one connector since
they are both for +(pos) to the tach. What you end up
with then are the three wires, black, green and red and then
follow the instructions above.

All in all it's been a learning curve, a bit frustrating at first (trying to get those teeny weeny pins out of the black connector) but with a bit of studying and help from the very knowledgeable D9 and those other posts, it worked quite well, it now works perfectly and the bonnnie is back together with a new wonderful mini tachometer.
Many thanks to all who answered, this board is a true resource for wrenching and stuff and I for one am glad it's here.....
Thanks guys..
Bill

I second that

Just installed a mini tach with LS1's instructions. They are absolutely accurate but you have to be careful especially with the instrument power (black/silver stripe) lead. That being said it looks stock when you're finished. And the kit he provides is second to none. Everything you need including a custom paper clip tool and shrink tubing pre-cut.

Nice touches LS1. Pics to come soon

Quote from instructions:

"Step 2 - Disconnect the battery from the terminals so there is no chance of anything shorting out"

Hey res1uqtp how did you fair with the paper clip tool?

Koifarm - what was wrong in the end that caused the tach not to work?

Feedback on the instructions either good or bad are welcome.

The pins in the connector are tricky the first time - once you understand how to release them it is a cinch.

I buggered up one pin the first time - but I had no idea what the pin looked like or anything. But the plastic bar on the back of the connector will hold the pin in correctly even if you mess up the connector.

oh and for the record

I was "seconding" the installation of the mini tach kit. Not the trouble. I had no difficulty installing using LS1's kit and instruction set. When I said be carefull with the black wire I meant the fit as those wires are just a hair bigger in diameter than the others your working with so they're a tight fit.

BTW - That paper clip tool worked great!!!! Wen't for a ride this evening for two reasons ......

1 Had to make sure the new tach was working correctly (check)
2 It's ACTUALLY not raining in east central Illinois for a change .... can you say 8" of rain last night ............... GEEZ I'm sick of that!

problems

I'm not exactly sure LS1, I do know I had a difficult time popping those little pins out. Just a guess, I think there was a direct short between the red tach wire and the red/blue stripe. Those two are soooo close together, my guess is that my soldering was too sloppy even though I took great care and the two shorted out. I could have left the black ground on and put the other two leads (green and red on the parking light, that would prove the bad ground theory but I moved all three so no way to tell for sure, I'll take a hit and chalk it up to sloppy technique on my part since lots of others have had no problems with the installation.
You well know that the pins in that connector are incredibly close to each other (less than a MM) so that was likely my problem.
Everything is fine now though....as I said I did retain the three prong plug you supplied, it's great!
