Chain Adjuster Bolt Loose
Before take off I always give my 07 Bonnie Black the "once-over", check chain tension, look for leaks, get my hands on every major bolt. Makes me feel good humming down the interstate at 75+ mph.
Sunday I just happened to check my chain adjustment bolt on the left side (looking down on the bike from the back) it was about ready to fall off.
The other side was fine, in fact all the notches lined up evenly for both as far as placement. So I tightened the bolt and all seems well.
But the threading on my axle seems uneven (see pictures) the right side has more thread showing then the left, any big deal? Also why would my chain adjustment bolt be loose and only on one side? What if it fell out?
Thanks again forum, hopefully this isn't a big deal.
Loose adjustment bolt (after tightening)

My axle bolts look exactly the same way and have since new. The adjuster is supposed to be torqued to some relatively low value after adjusting the chain and tightening the axle bolts. Maybe it wasn't, maybe it was. You caught it and will keep an eye on it, I'm sure. Don't worry about it. It would take quite a while for it to back all the way out and get lost on the tarmac.

Have you ever had the rear wheel off? I'd recommend it....
The axle is a nut and bolt arrangement...so no worries there and the chain adjusters are locked in place by the axle...so no worries there either...The adjuster thread will have vibrated loose thats all just nip it up again (anticlock wise i think...but check) to reform the mechanical lock its meant to provide...
All the best

correction: i'll have to check the tensioners final locking direction i'm unsure

Anti-clockwise is the right way to go. This picture doesn't look right:
It looks like the adjuster was tightened clockwise. The wheel will move forward to close the gap you see between the thrust washers. It should look like this:

It's there. If it doesn't show up at first, hit "F5" to reload the page.

The wheel will creep forward if you don't tighten those adjusting screws--counterclockwise, or anticlockwise as our British friends say.
I found this out recently. For my whole life, I've been tightening the axle bolt by muscling it down, and turning the adjusters until snug. Since I installed Staintunes on this bike, I can easily get a torque wrench on it now, so I do.
So when I torque it to 85NM, which is apparently less than I torqued it previously by hand, and the adjusting screws worked a bit loose, the axle started creeping forward. I posted that here and with some help figured out that I had to pay more attention to sufficiently tightening the adjusters and making sure that they stay tight.
