Air Injection System

Proud owner of 2007 Bonneville Black.
I am told the air injection system causes superheated exhaust turning the head pipes blue.
Removing the AI system will decrease / eliminate the “blueing” effect.
1\Will this have an effect on the performance and fuel economy?
2\ will the header pipes stay blue?

1 - No.
2 - Yes, but you can try Simichrome or BlueAway to clean them up.

Blueing pipes

My pipes started blueing from day one, after a couple of weeks I removed the AI and the blueing has not got worse, so I would say yes, AI stops/slows down the blueing effect. Dont think it makes any difference to MPG.

AI

I know this may be stupid, but then what use is the AI? haa any reason I should leave it on? and will the blueing get so bad as to "rot" the pipes or anything if I dont?

The AI is just a simple pollution control device that injects air/oxygen into the header pipe to burn more potential pollutants. I first ran into it on late 1960's U.S. autos.

A/I

Just an OLD pollution devise used in the early 70's. Very inneffective!! Just blows fresh air into the exhaust. Said to burn off crap? I think if you put fresh air in any exhaust- it will make the emmissions lower? Get rid of it!!! A proper;ly tuned enginewill do better than the A/I will do! I think Triumph used it as a cheap way to get the bikes into the US? NOONE uses it now!! Bikes or cars!! Pipes will blue no matter. Not all the way tho! The bluing is part of the Triumph heritage! W/O- they blue just to where thety are supposed to- past the 1st bend. W- they will blue all the way! Makes the bike run smoother as well!!

Actually it does lower emissions, but I've also removed mine when the reed valves started to squeek.

Here's a few pointers to the wiki pages

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secondary_air_injection

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automob...ssions_control

I've noticed that the bike idles differently when cold. The idle RPMs would increase quickly to 3K or so with the choke and the AI. Since removing the AI, the cold idle does not increase as quickly (it still gets faster as the bike warms up just not at the same rate).

I have not noticed any change in the engine's "smoothness" or performance with the AI removed.

blue pipes

My old Ducatis used to blue the pipes , blue pipes were normal till the japanese bikes got popular, they all use double wall pipes to limit heating of the chrome on the outer pipe. this also causes restriction due to the smaller inner pipe, limiting performance.

aren't blue pipes sometimes a sign of a lean burning engine? ...or does it happen no matter what?
