Question 17" vs. 18" Front Wheel And Tire

I have a T100 and am considering replacing the rims with aluminum ones when the tires wear through. I am considering a 17" front due to the wide varity of tire choices. But I need to look further if the right prifile is available. I'm sure the speedo will be affected if this isn't considered. However, are there any downsides to going to 17"? I'm concerned primarily with the handling and stability of the bike. Thanks.

i'm on a 790 with Thruxton wheels, Bonnie triple trees, bonnie lengh rear shocks.
It works fine.
It's not quite as stable as stock at high speed but the turn in is faster.
The steering input is lighter but it requires more effort. You have to work the bars more.
It does notwant to stand up quite as readly as stock but a little throttle and some input on exit fixes that. It's not a problem.

If you want a cruiser/tourer then stick with the 19" front.
If you want to be able to toss it around a little easier then go with the 18".
You may want to consider going with Thruxton lenght rear springs in conjunction with the wheel change. It will also help quicken things up.

Wink

I have dropped the forks about 1/2" in the trees and that helped a lot. I am not concerned with the ground clearance loss with this since its a street bike and not on a track. I am considering the 18" front but would really like feedback concerning what a 17" would be like. I am worried it willbe like the 16" wheels they had on some of the Guzzi LeMans. Most people went to 17" all around because of the poor handling. Most bikes now are 17" all around so I was just wondering if it could be done safely. Thanks for the input.

Sorry, I got wheel sizes mixed up.
the only person I know with a 17" front is Bonnie1000- Carlos at South Bay Triumph. I don't know his exact set up but he is a very helpfull fellow.
Try giving him a call. If he can help he will.

I believe he's currently using custom Triples with decreased offset.

The smaller wheel will change both your gyroscopic inertia and the effective fork angle and trail. All these change will make the bike more nimble in turning. Good if you like the twisties but decidedly less stable on the highways or while crusing. You will have to be more attentive to "steering" your bike.

Check it out but keep your old wheel in case you do not like it.
