"slipping" and backfire

Hi all, thanks for the great site- today I was riding my 2007 Bonneville t-100- it was raining slightly and I noticed going up a small hill at regular speed that the engine seemed to be slipping every few hindred feet- then when I turned on my road it backfired- has never done this- and then when I stopped and reved the throttle it went up to 5k and erratically bounced around? Im not as technically able as Id like tobe but this seemed odd- it has only my 1700 miles on it so this was scary- thanks for any ideas- could it be the rain?

by engine slipping do you mean feeling as though its hitting reserve, with erratic firing etc? If so id say spray yer coils with WD40 before any riding in the rain. Had similar issue and the WD40 cured it.

Another 07 faulty pick-up coil??
Maybe I m just paranoid, but there is too many of these failing for Triumph to ignore the problem anymore.

yes

thanks for the reply- yeah I went out just now and rev'ed it in neutral to 2.5k rpm's each time it sends the indicator up to 5k and back quickly 2-3 times quickly could that be coils still? is there also a thread about these coils? I appreciate the advice on the wd-40 and will do so- thanks Ry

Pull off your seat.

Disconnect the battery (negative lead first).

Disconnect the igniter (flat black thing just a little ways behind the battery with a large electrical connection with many contacts. Put a lot of dielectric grease (you can buy this at any auto parts store) on the connector and reconnect the igniter.

Reconnect the battery (negative lead last). Make sure the connections are tight.

Install the seat and go for a ride. If this doesn't cure the problem, call the dealer and make an appointment for service.

You're getting the moisture out of the electrical connections, which is what was making it intermittent. If the problem goes away, you not only do not have to take it to the dealer, but you've gained valuable knowledge.
