07 America Wet Weather Problem

I ran into a horrendous rain storm last weekend in my america she managed 12 miles before she died on me. I soon found out that the water was spraying directly onto the coil packs which are located right on the front underside of the tank. I did get her running again with WD-40 to disperse the water but she only managed another 9 miles. Has anyone else come across this problem and how have you cured it? I dont really want to spray the coil packs with silicon do i have any other choice?

Cheers Neil

Neil ya not alone, I had the same trouble a couple of weeks ago on my America and a couple of mates both had the same trouble last week with their America's too (all happened in BIG storms). I took my tank off once I had limped the bike home and greased the coil connections and every other electrical connection in sight whilst I was at it. So far, *reaches out to touch wood* it has sorted the problem. Good luck mate.

Ben

Agree with Ben on this one, Dielectric grease is your friend!

Same here, I had that problem on my Bonnie. This weekend I coated every electrical connector on my Scrambler with dielectric grease, even the connectors in the headlight bucket. I found that the coil boots are not very good at sealing so I laid in some grease and used large fuel type clamps on the boots, I am heading to the Grand Canyon end of June and wanted to try to prevent any moisture problems.

Revolt, I must challenge your assertion. I have never lived in Arizona, but a buddy and I rode through on our way to CA a couple years back during what we learned was the monsoon. Ya'll read that right--the monsoon.

We had a good laugh as we put on our rainsuits for the umpteenth time at the entrance to an Indian reservation IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DANG DESERT!!

So just be aware. As we learned, it does rain in the desert. A lot, apparently, sometimes!

As a side note, I have to change the starter relay on my chopper each time I ride it in the rain. I've become very adept.

Yeah I guess you never know when it will rain in the desert. Slathering that dielectric grease about may just give me a little more peace of mind though.
