need help removing the speedo cable from wheel
hi all. i am a newbie bonny owner and still learning about the bike. unfortunately, i took a curve a little too fast and wrecked the front wheel and fender. i have ordered the parts and am in the process of removing the chrome stays from the forks. my question is how do i remove the speedo cable. it is threaded through a guard on the rear cable stay. i need to remove the cable to remove the stay. thanks, keith

Unscrew the phillips head screw that holds it to the speedo drive and it pops right out.Give it a good oiling whilst its off, my first one snapped at 9,000 km because it was dry.

Grease, engine oil, anything other than WD40 which will dry it out.

Pull out the speedo cable and clean it (if needed) with a rag or paper towel and some WD40. Wipe off the WD40 with a clean rag or paper towel.
I use light grease, put a small blob on my finger and work it onto the cable for its entire length. There should only be a thin film of it, too much will just gunk things up, and don't do anything to risk getting grease into the gauge. Pay special attention to greasing the top 6 inches or so, where it goes around the bend behind the gauge. Leave the last 1/2 inch or so, where it enters the gauge, clean.
When you re-insert, the cable can be difficult to get around the bend. Lightly chuck the bottom end of the cable in a low-speed drill and slowly and gently spin it in, then it only takes a few seconds.
If you oil it, you can follow pretty much the same procedure, as you mentioned. I don't know if oil or grease is better, just don't put too much of either on it, and keep the stuff out of the gauge.
The beauty of the speedo cable is that you can pull it out to lube it. The others are harder to do.

Go to Carquest and ask them for some Pioneer Speedometer cable lube.Comes in a little one-time use tube, and is cheap.Industry standard, and works good.Car cables go a couple hundred thousand miles before being re-lubed.
I think chain lube would probably work pretty good too.I've always used it with good results on clutch, and brake cables, but I don't think I've ever tried it on speedo cables.Especially the waxy kind, like Bel-Ray.The speedo cable lube we used to use was a big yellow chunk of waxy clay-like stuff, that you wrapped around the cable, then just pulled it through.I haven't seen that stuff in years, though.
Good advise about not lubing the part that goes into the speedo.

Cheers!
Bruce
