chain adjustment

I need to make an adjustment in the chain- looks a little loose. The Haynes manuel says to remove the silencers in order to apply a torque wrench(spanner) when re-tightening the axle nuts. That is necessary if you use a torque wrench, but is it necessary to use a torque wrench?

You only need a torque wrench if you care about how tight the retaining bolt is snugged down.

You only care if the retaining nut is snugged down if you want the axle and wheel (and the associated tire) to remain on the bike during operation.

Do you want the tire/wheel combo to stay on the bike? Well that come down to how much you care about the operator's health, safety and general welfare.

I guess that makes it a judgment call?

In other words use a torque wrench (please).

Thumbs up Torque

BonneBilly had post a couple days back on torque & the axkle nut. I made a couple as well
Snug is all necessary! No need to remove the silencer. Adjust the chain on the side stand as mentioned in the manual! Hand tighten the bolt & give it that little extra push- done!
Dont put a 3' pipe on it! Just give it your best w/ a wrench & I give it a little push w/ my sneaker- done. Never had a problem! Torque is VERY important on head/ valve cover bolts. The axle nut needs to be TIGHT- not over tightened!

I don't bother with the torque wrench when it's not convenient. Just do it tight.

And don't overtighten the chain, leave it at the loose end of the spec.

Thumbs up Chain

I keep mine @1 1/4" slack- the outside spec in the book. Just stays there- never have to adjust it!
