Oil Leak - Bottom of Engine
Somewhere on the bottom of my '05 790cc, aft of the oil filter, is an oil leak. Well, more like an oil seep. Not enough to affect the oil level noticeably, but enough that it needs cleaning every couple of days. If I don't clean it, it pools enough to drip on the rear tire.
I thought it might be the filter, so I did an oil & filter change a couple weeks ago, but no effect on the leak. It's definitely not coming from the oil drain plug - front of the engine is dry on the bottom. I guess the wind stream spreads the oil around, it's just very hard to localize except it's behind the filter.
There's a wire running into the bottom of the crankcase immediately behind the filter. Is it possible that fitting is leaking? Anyone have any likely guesses for a leak in this area?
Thanks,
Jonathan

That wire is either the neutral switch or the oil pressure switch, I'm not sure which. You could try disconnecting it and checking how tight the switch is. I believe it takes a deep 14mm socket.

Oil Leak
Most common leaks seem to be the neutral safety switch which you mentioned, and output shaft ( front sprocket ) seal.

FYI, the oil pressure sending unit is fitted between the carbs, on the oil supply line for the camshafts. Rear of the cylinder head, of course.

rear sprocket
Hi there i just took my bike back to the dealer for an oil leak which ended up being a leak round the sprocket then dripping down past the oil filter. It took 2 oil filter changes before they found it but now good as new. regards Kevin

Had a similar leak at the beginning of the year..took it dealer and it turned out to be the neutral switch...replaced under warranty....apparently they have some sort of ceramic housing that has a tendency to fail....

Chain crap build-up under the sprocket cover melting down?? A thought? Gotta clean out that mess x2/ yr!! It will melt down & look like an oil leak if it gets too "built up"? Doesnt sound serious?

mine leaks from the neutral safety switch. not much just a couple of drips every now and then.
originally thought it was the oil filter can.

Yeah, that's what I thought too. It wasn't, but no harm in changing the oil & filter a little before time. I wonder if tightening the switch helps, or if it needs replacing? Anybody know what the torque spec is for the neutral switch?
