Floppy Clutch Lever and Other Curiosities

So I noticed a slight rattling sound almost like something was a tad loose on the front end - kind of a buzzing. I didn't think much of it but just by chance I rested my hand under the clutch lever since it's kind of floppy anyway and low and behold when I applied upward pressure to the lever the buzzing sound went away.

I also notice an almost electric buzz when I apply my brakes, this even happened before the EBC's that were installed last week. I have a open face Davida so I can hear every little scrape, ding or rattle pretty well. The same sound is present yet faint even when the brake is not engaged.

My question is first off why is the clutch lever so floppy? Seems pretty common since I looked at / checked other Triumph's at the dealership - and what could that noise be from? Goes away when I apply upward pressure.

Also what gives with that electrical current type sound coming from the brakes?

Thanks again forum!

Drew,

I always thought that you were listening to Barbara Streisand on your iPod when you rode.

Noise from brakes...

I suspect it is just what drilled / slotted rotors sound like as they pass between the brake pads. I've noticed that sort of noise on my bike, especially while braking.

Buzzing

Drew,
The buzzing that you hear from your front brakes is from the cross-drilling in the rotor, it is normal.

How much flopping are you getting the the clutch lever? How far can you deflect the end, does it move around 1", .5" etc. Have you ever seen how floppy the levers are on a evo softail? They flap like wings.

I think the real issue with your bike is the loose nut behind the wheel. Just ride it.

Thumbs up Buzz/Flop

Dont know the brake gig? The clutch lever can be quieted w/ a little grease (thick stuff) will quiet that down. I cant believe you can hear it @ 60+ mph? They are cheap aluminum & will get play real fast. You used to be able to "pinch" the bracket, but the cheap grade of aluminum used these days- Id be afraid of it breaking!! A thin washer/ shim wil work as well. Hey if thats the worst that has happened- you are lucky!!These bikes are far from quiet! Just RIDE & ENJOY!!

Drew,
I checked out my clutch lever during my ride home tonight. It does seem to flop a little, but I am not concerned, just keep an eye on yours and if it suddenly seems looser than it was previously, be concerned.

One way to quiet levers...

I definitely echo the concern on "pinching" the bracket.

I used to (more later) get similar noises on my '06 Thruxton...I always assumed the "buzz" was the cross-drilled rotors, but the rattle at high revs was a mystery...hopefully until now. But...

I dropped my bike the first week I had it ("Yeah, I'm so cool, watch me dismount without putting the sidestand down"...classic no-brainer. Luckily it was in my garage, so nobody saw) and the clutch lever got bent down a little. I eased it back up but was afraid to go too far. Always made the action a little less than optimal. Got courageous last night in the garage and broke it clean off. Looking for a new one today.

I'll say this though...the clutch lever doesn't make any noise at all laying on the workbench.

My 08' does the clutch lever shake at certain RPM ranges. It bugs the hell out of me so I am going to go to Marshals Hardware and look for some small rubber washers to put in there.
I will let you know how it goes.
