Gas or Oil in the airbox

I know this has been posted before, but I can't find it. It's hard to search on a topic with "gas" and "airbox" in the text...about a thousand results....

What is the problem if I discover gas or oil in my airbox? After my trip to Maggie Valley a few weeks ago, I was going over my machine and discovered some smelly substance in my airbox. I cleaned it out and will check again tonight (after a few days of riding) to see if it's come back.

But as a general question, what was the problem if this is a symptom?

Many thanks!
nick

Its probably oil from the breather. There is a tube that runs from right behind the cylinder head (by the engine case) to the airbox. Absolutely normal.

Question Oil in Box

I remember seeng a post on that issue. I think there is a "slinger" in the primary case to keep the oil from entering the airbox. Dont remember the specifics tho. It can also be an oil "over fill" issue as well. I dont know how much oil (whatever)you have in the box? I have an 04 & the 06's are a whole lot different. If its a lot- I would think that slinger whatever?
If your intake is still stock- then thats the avenue I would look into- if not an over fill issue? Maybe if you refine your search to the "slinger", you will get some more specific answers? Make sure you arent "over filled" 1st! Then go from there. I whish I could be more helpfull on this one , but there are a lot of possibilitys here. Hopefully its a simple issue!!
Good luck!!!

You're going to find a little oil mist in the air box from time to time, it's a natural byproduct of the crankcase venting the internal pressure, especially when you've run the bike for long hours at speed. Check the pale red drain capture pipe under the box and see how much gunk is in there (you should clean this once every blue moon)...

It's the crankcase breather. If you're really concerned I believe you can buy a filter that goes directly on the breather hose....kinda cool cuz it's itty bitty

awesome. i'm glad this is normal/not a big issue. i remember reading something about it a while back and was worried that my engine was hacking up oil into the airbox.

i'll check the hose and will probably end up with one of those nice filters stuck on there.

thanks for putting my mind at ease, ya'll!
