A couple quick carb questions...
Hey guys, I have a couple carb questions.
I removed my EVLS last week, and now my bike is harder to start and takes longer to warm up.
No biggie, just a bit of a pain.
So I'm thinking that somehow I am now running leaner than ever, and want to adjust the IMS and possibly add a shim.
I've done plenty of carb work on my '84 Shadow as that uses Keihin CV carbs as well. (But they are downdraft style so a bit different).
1. Is the IMS covered up by a plug? I see a spot that looks likely, its about 3/8" diameter, but I don't want to pierce it and pull it out if that's not it.
2. Can you pull the needle and add a shim without removing the tank?
I tried to do so this afternoon and I took off the 4 screws holding the slide/diaphragm cover, and I removed the spring and the white needle retainer, but I couldn't figure out how to get the needle out without pulling out the whole piston, which I'd rather not do because in my experience the more you mess with the diaphragm the more likely it will get misshapen and become torn or develop pinholes. The needle is nonferrous, a magnet didn't work. So what do you do?
3. Could pulling the EVLS cause this seemingly leaner condition, or should I look elsewhere for the gremlin?
The bike is an '07 T100 with TOR's, I don't remember if the pilots are 40 or 42, the main is 115, AI gone, snorkle gone, EVLS gone. Otherwise stock.
Thanks!
-Kris

yes the idle screws have plugs over them they allso take a d shaped tool to turn them.
It is easyer to pull the tank nothing to it just 2 seat bolts under rear of seat and 2 tank bolts at rear of tank .1 fuel hose at fuel valve(turn fuel off) and one vent hose under other side of tank.

Hi Kris,
I have an 07, and my carbs only required the D tool. You can buy a tool from newbonneville.com. I think the mixture screws only had plugs over them on 04 models and earlier - but I am not 100% certain of that.
Are you up for a ride this sunday afternoon? Lindsayt and I are going to hook up at 2.30pm - I haven't figured a meeting place yet.
Also - I think the only way you're going to get those needles out is to pull the diaphragm and piston.
It just so happens, for reasons I shall not disclose, that I have a spare set of carbs. If you like you can look those over prior to working on your own set.

The needles do indeed lift out - maybe you can get down in the piston with tweezers and grab the needle that way. When I did mine I just carefully pulled the piston and diaphragm, and tipped the needle out.

if your IMS's are plugged, you don't need a D tool, just need to remove the plugs.
Like they said, no need to remove the tank to get to the needles. Just pull the cap off the carbs, remove the spring and carrier, and pull out the whole diaphragm assembly and the needle will come with it.

Thanks for the replies.
So it is possible that removing the EVLS plus the other mods made it just lean enough to have problems cold?
Is this the location of the Idle Mixture Screw?
Stuart, yes as long as the weather holds I would like to join you on Sunday.
I've had the tank off before, you're right Mike it's not hard, but if the needle adjustment could be made with the tank in place it would be that much easier.
Thanks guys!

I wonder if I have "older" carbs on my '07, I thought the D-tool was for 2004 on.
When I 'unplugged' my Shadow carbs they had more of a soft lead plug that I screwed a drywall screw into and then pulled out with vice grips.
If the plug on the Bonnie's CVK is where I think it is, that looks more like a thin metal cap.
Should I do the same thing?
Thanks, -K

Mixture screw
The mixture screw is on the bottom of the carb.
