My 2007 Bonneville Backfires when I turn it off....Normal?

Hey all, just as the subject heading says:

My 2007 Bonneville has been running perfectly. (well except that I have to switch to reserve at 106 miles versus the 125 everyone else is getting)...I'm just hoping that its because I'm still breaking in the bike considering that I only have 1300 miles on it.

Anyway, whenever I shut off my bike, I hear a single backfire. The bike is completely stock. I'm curious if this is normal or something I should be concerned about. If its of concern, what may be the possible problems and how to fix it?

My '06 Bonneville America also often emits a single, very quiet backfire right after I turn it off. It doesn't do it every time, but approximately half the time. As with yours it runs beautifully and, therefore, hasn't been of concern.

I'm getting about 88 miles out of a tank of gas before reserve -

Mine does the same thing on occassion. Runs well though.

Drew –

You have got to be joking. I was past 140 yesterday when I hit reserve. Granted my engine is 100% stock (with the exception of 4 new intake valves installed courtesy of a less than competent valve adjustment by yours truly) but 88 miles… SHEESH. What are you getting 30 mpg?

A bit of, ahem, grownup talk. My 2005 Bonneville gets wildly different mileage results depending upon whether I ride it like a sensible person, acting my age, or accelerate around town like a jackass. (And, to be fair, in the beginning of this season, taking really absurdly short town trips in coolish weather with the choke in play a lot will obviously burn a lot of gas).

Around town in the cool weather, with the choke on a good part of the time, I got only about 100 miles to reserve last tank (a little better than 30 mpg; not so great).

Last summer, however, riding fairly fast, but steadily (and not accelerating aggressively on a coolish, rich engine), I did great: riding down the Oregon side of the Columbia River gorge, averaging between 75 and 80 mph, I got just a smidgeon over 180 miles to reserve (about 60 mpg).

I think that bikes respond with much less subtlety to how they're pushed than do cars.

...eh that would be me...jackass.

I think one time I got 112 miles out of a tank before reserve...time for a re-jet?

The worst I have ever gotten is ~35mpg (tuned poorly), most of these bikes should get 40-45mpg no matter how you drive it, if you are tuned properly. Most people are not tuned properly, IMHO. You can't just use what someone tells you, you have to dyno it and get the AF curve dialed in.

You don't have to dyno unless you're planning on hitting the track.. and even then...

if you can tell you're getting crap for mileage, use some common sense and narrow down the problem.. It could be something as silly as a leaky petcock allowing gas to evaporate, or it could be the tuning of the bike itself.

Did you check the plugs to see if they are carbon fouled? that would tell you a lot quicker and cheaper if your AF ratio is out of whack..

I also get a quiet thump out of the mufflers. A guy at work asked if I turned the bike off with the key or the switch. He said he's 'heard that using the switch is better for the coil. Anyway, I always use the key, so I tried the switch and it still did it.
And by the way, 110 is my usual. I also work with another guy that has a stock Scrambler. He was calculating his fuel mileage when I walked in. I had just filled up, so we did mine too. He got about 48 mpg, I got 35! Mines jetted with Predators and I'm about 25 years younger.

Why are you riding around with your choke on. In cold weather I just use it to start the the bike and turn it off leaving my neighborhood.

I get around 43mpg with Predators and NH Togas.
