I think the center stand is worth the price for winter storage, it's nice to have it up off the back wheel for five months at a time.

One good benefit of the center stand is if you park the bike on it, the bike is much harder to tip over if someone bumps into it, I think. It's a sturdier way to park the bike on the street. Biggest negative is the extra weight, the c.s. probably weighs 20 + pounds, the cluncking doesn't bother me. I am glad that I got mine, but it definately makes you aware of the bike's substantial weight when you put it up on and push it off the 'ole c.s.

Traveling
Yeah A jack would be kinda hard to "pack"? BUT how many times have you or do you intend to change a flat on the road?? If I ride to a friends home (long distance) - I wont be cleaning my wheels or polishing etc.. Lube the chain on a long trip? I can still walk the bike thru a chain lube. I just wouldnt spend $200+ for something that isnt really necessary? $59 - yeah for the many things it can do! Bikes used to come w/ center stand STD. They dont any more. Ya think there is a reason why? I can!

In my opinion, a bike, any bike, at least any bike that is used for everything from weekend cruising to cross country touring, should come with a centerstand. If, in addition to the centerstand, the owner wants to invest in a lift, go for it.
The Triumph was the first in a string of eleven bikes I'd owned that did not come with a center stand. Should have been on the bike from the start, instead of my having to purchase a good used one and install it myself.
I personally don't think one should have to decide "..... should I have a centerstand or use a bike lift...?" The two issues don't directly relate.
To me the question should be "... do I need a bike lift in addition to the centerstand...?"
Obviously, this is a very subjective topic.

Got one on mine ...
I ordered one for mine before taking delivery on the Scrambler. Would never own a bike with spoked wheels without one. I use it more often than the sidestand.

Took mine off when the hinge wore out on it, & it got real loose & rattly. But I never really liked it from new. It was always too noisy, & restricted cornering angles. I only kept it on because it protected the under-slung rear brake caliper, when bush riding. & I like the look of a bike on a centre stand (it also made it easier to park in my little car port). But I've replaced it with a pit stand, which works just as well, & is actually a lot easier to mount the bike onto.
& the bike looks just as cool on it's shiny red pit stand, as it did on it's greasy old centre stand. (IMO)

My T100 came with a centre stand. I have since purchased a motorcycle lift, I have to raise the bike with the lift so that I can get the bike onto the centre stand!
I do use the centre stand to change oil etc, but as for using it in normal use, I look too foolish struggling to get it onto the thing. I've seen the threads and advice etc., but I just can't get the hang of it. If I'd paid $200+ for it I'd be really ticked.

6t,
I have a Scrambler and find it quite easy to put on to the centre stand. On a couple of other motorcycle boards there have been long threads on how to get a bike on the centre stand. The consensus is that you don't 'lift' a bike on as much as push down on the foot of the stand and pop the bike up.
Suggested technique: left hand on left handgrip, right hand on top tube of passenger footrest. Gently rock the bike from side to side to make sure both sides of the stand are in contact with the ground, then push down hard and fast on the centre stand tab with the right foot. At this point my left foot may actually come off the ground. The bike should come up on the stand fairly easily. Hope that helps.
