Angry Engine coating flaking off!!!

I washed my bike today and noticed that the black coating was chipping off the engine case! There is a spot about the size of a dime that has lifted near the oil filler cap. Has anyone else experienced this? Should this be covered under warranty?

That's a new one

To me, anyway. I don't recall hearing anyone having problems with their black casings, maybe just didn't see it.

Arrow Bring It In

I would bring it to a Triumph dealer and have it looked especially if you are still under the manufacture's warranty.

I just posted a thread about using the warranty.

I hope this is of some help.

I appreciate the warranty link. I am quite familiar with warranty claims as I have had the bike repaired on 7 different occasions under warranty. I guess I will find out soon enough if they are going to give me grief over the coating flaking. I wonder though, what options are available? I mean, if the engine case coat is compromised, will they replace the engine? I have heard of this scenario with BMW F800s and BMW (reluctantly) replaced the engine. I don't see Triumph going to that length.

I have a 2007 Bonneville T100 and the same problem has occurred on the black powdercoat on the bottom half of the cooling fins. I too am taking it into the dealer. How much luck I will have based on previous experience is still uncertain.

I'd prep and rattle can the area. Time at the dealer = less time riding.

I took it to the dealer and this is what they said:

"Triumph says that paint and coatings are only covered for one year, unlike the rest of the bike."

I looked at the warranty and it does not limit paint and coatings to one year. Regarding paint, it states, "Other items excluded from warranty are seats, luggage, paint, chrome, polished aluminum items, or trim deterioration caused by normal wear and tear, exposure or lack of correct maintenance".

I take it to mean all of these are excluded IF AND ONLY IF they are the result of normal wear and tear, exposure or lack of correct maintenance. Since the offending area is not a result of any of the above, I would assume warranty coverage.

I'm actually quite amazed that any of the black coating even comes off. I tried to bead blast my chain guard and wasn't able to even start it coming off. On mine it's really on there strong.

My engine block has the aluminium-look coating, not black, and the bike is much older than yours (2001) but it has flaked pretty badly for a couple of years now. It does get ridden in all weather conditions, and I live just 200 metres from a salt-water estuary, but even so I think the coating is pretty poor quality. I know that I am far from alone in having this problem.
