Chain Lube - WOW

At the risk of sounding like a newbe, I tried a new chain lube today and what a difference. I had been using a generic lube, penetrant and water displacer -cleaning and spraying every 200 or so miles. Tonight my son brought home some Repsol Chain Lube. Drive train was noticably smoother with very little noise. Felt like a different bike. If my son had said "try this, it will make your bike smoother" I would have said "Yeah right" and ignored him.

BTW - I am not being paid but wanted to let others know that a quality lube makes all the difference - Sorry could not resist.

It does indeed make a big difference - or can anyway. I was at my local kawasaki dealer the other day and I see they just started carrying scottoilers. Those things are great - expensive but they massively cut down on chain lube maintenance, and keep your chain very clean. Basically consists of an oil reservoir that meters out small amounts of oil directly onto your chain while riding.

I had one on my bike in the UK, and it ws great. I never had to clean the chain, but getting the flow set right is critical. Get it wrong and you have oil all over the place, up your back.........

Anyway. Keep an eye out for them. When I get one on my bonnie I will post a review and pics of installation.

Yes, WD40 is not chain lube. You can put some on a rag and use it to clean the chain, though.

If you put proper lube on it, you don't need to do it that often. I go about 1000 miles--of relatively clean riding--between cleanings/lubes.

Winzer Corporation's Polylube 250 is what I use. It has great cling and is long lasting. A great product for certain. Google it to find a supplr near you. I get it from a local sales rep.

That's all very well, but if you do get any appreciable grime / dust build up, the combo of sticky chain lube and grit can make a very efficibient grinding paste. The O rings are supposed to stop that stuff getting inside the rollers, but it's a tough environment.

I like the use of a lighter oil (not WD40 - far too lite) as it keeps the chain clean. Problem is, you have to continuously apply it.

Right now I use PJ1, which certainly works, but I am getting that scottoiler on next month.

I had one on a ZX1100 in the UK - in 3 years I never had to adjust or clean the chain it worked so well, and wiping of the bit of flung oil from the rear wheel was easy, and in fact helped me keep the rear wheel clean.

Whatever lube you use - ride safe and free chaps!

What kind of oil is recommended for the Scottoiler? I've been considering getting one for my Commando.Sprocket replacement is an expensive PIA on those things,so meticulous chain maintenance is a must.I replace the chain on that bike when it starts to show any amount of stretch at all,not including initial run-in.Anything that would extend the life of those chains, and cut down some on maintenance would be welcome.

As far as conventional chain spray lube for my Scrambler goes,I have been very happy with Bel-Ray Super Clean. It seems to penetrate well, stays on the chain, and doesn't attract dirt, even with as much off-roading as I do.

Cheers!

Well, this is where they get you of course - scottoil recommend their own brand of oil for the thing, and it's not cheap.

However, a can of chain lube isn't that cheap either, and the stuff scottoiler sells has a certain cling to it that seems to stop it just flinging off all over the place - although if you adjust the flow in the wrong direction it will do just that.

Well there it is. For the price of the scottoiler you can buy a great many cans of chain lube.

I just love a nice clean chain though.

Thumbs up Chain

Havent adjusted it in over a year! Use WD to clean & wax to lube.It works for me &a couple friends. The lack of adjustment says all is well! Try it- youll like it?
