Should I be concerned?
I recently became the proud owner of a 08 EFI Bonneville Black, I wasn’t keen on the all blue effect of the down pipes so the dealer suggested an air injection removal kit which I had done. However I noticed on the Norman Hyde web site that they didn’t recommend the A I removal kit as they said that removal of the air injection can, under some circumstances, destroy the pre-catalyst units fitted in the down pipes, this effectively blocks the down pipes and stops the bike. Any Thoughts

When someone answers his question please explain to this dummy what a pre-catalyst unit is.

Javlin,
the pipes will turn blue, a bit less with the A.I. removed. No worries 'bout the pipes clogging.
Never mind harsh comments on the forum-us dummies form the greater part of it.

Thieu.

I am sorry for the misunderstanding. I was talking about me being the dummy. I don't know what a pre-catalyst is.

A pre catalyst prevents the formation of greenhouse gases by messing with the mixture entering your engine.Yeah, right: before it's even burnt! The power goes down, building the bike costs more but the polar bears will be grateful.

You asked for it- I read some of the stuff- feel even dumber now. Thieu.
PS: it gan be gutted- life is beautiful!

A pre-cat is a small catalytic converter and therefore always fitted to the exhaust side of an engine, relatively close to the exhaust port. There's nothing to catalyze until after combustion. They are generally fitted to engines to help meet cold-running emission standards, as the full-size cats aren't effective until they reach their operating temperatures, and being near the combustion source, the pre-cats heat up much quicker. They do cause quite a restriction in exhaust flow when fitted. If you look at the illustration on that link, you will see the pre-cat shown is very near an O2 sensor.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catalytic_converter
look under "Conventional spark ignition engines" >> near the end of that chapter)

dbarber:
you're right-me dummie.
I did some more reading (link) and the controlling of the mixture is meant to make the pre-cat's (exhaust side, agreed) work easier.
I supposed (wrong, I know) the fiddling with the mixture was the pre cat thing.

Thieu.
PS- anyway- I tricked one of the smart 'uns into teaching us...
