What are you using to repack with? Have you tried multiple brands, or have you stuck with the same stuff. When I do my first with these I would like to keep a similar sound out of them.

I've tried a couple of different things... looking more for something that lasted longer than 5,000 miles. In the end they all burned up within 5k. I've settled on "Moose" fiberglass sheets. It's cheap. You need 2 Packages, 1 for each megaphone.

Mmmmm I have D&D's with 6800 miles on them - how do I check if they are burnt up? Honestly they are a little ratty and tinny - can changing the glass help?

Mmmmm...

If they sound tinny then the bottom 1/3 of the packing is burnt up. replace the packing and get the back-pressure back, it's a noticeable improvement.

Not that I am doubting the butt or ear dyno, but this info is straight from the techs at D&D:

It should take more than 5000 miles but if the pipe is getting to loud then you may want to do a repack. You can call sales 817-834-8961 and they can sell you a repack kit.
We use to use glass packing only and now we use steal wool and glass packing.

I got my D&D's a few years ago, so I am not sure if they have the "just glass packing, or the mix of glass and steel wool", but it seems the mix would provide a longer life span to me, and maybe prevent the burn thru you are seeing at the 5000 mile mark.

When I re-packed mine the first time @ exactly 5,000 miles. The packing was all fiberglass & it was at least 25% burnt up at the end closest to the motor...

I've used SS & Fiberglass (SS first, then covered with fiberglass) and about 5,000 miles later had about the same result... and cleaning out the SS was a bit more effort.

I tried a different brand of fiberglass, not much difference there either. So this last time I went back to Moose, it's cheap and easy!

Are you losing Mad HP, No! What you lose is Throttle Response, Crispness. It takes me all of an hour to repack 'em. oh and it costs about $13.00 for the fiberglass.

The Stainless Steel was expensive!

Well when you change em out give us an update on how it turns out for ya. I think mine still feels fine to date, but I know what I can start to look for when the time comes.

Silent Sport is good stuff-I repacked mine at 2,500 miles and they were burnt up about 1/3 of the way back from the front and very thinly packed from the factory. ez way to get the baffles out is grab with VG pliers and twist. Worked for me. Pack them tight with a stick per the SS instruction and you will like what you hear and they will stay with you for awhile-I am now at 2,500 plus and still running great. That is with 39mm Mikuni and other mods.
