Stock Mirrors are loose. Anyone Else?

I can't seem to get my stock mirrors tight on my 06 Bonnie. I've taken them out to see how they're constructed and it seems that the shaft just seems to "spin" inside the "grab ring" for lack of a better description. They tend to move only at speed but I can easily swivel them with slight pressure no matter how much I tighten down and I'm afraid of stripping them.

Should that ring with the little ridges be attached to the shaft in some way? Like maybe there was an adhesive attached at one time that has broken loose?

Twist the whole assembly around on its shaft until you feel it getting tighter, and then get an allen wrench and tighten it up from the bottom of the handlebars while still holding the mirror.

Loose mirrors

I had the same problem and the same fear of stripping the bolt. The mirror stalk appeared to be bottoming against the tightening bolt.

I pulled the mirror shaft completely free of the lever/switch pod and ground/filed a slight amount off the bottom of the shaft to prevent it from bottoming out against the bolt. Hasn't slipped since!

Had the same problem on one of my mirrors. Appeared to be bottoming out also. Simply added a larger washer between the tightening bolt and nut, and problem solved.

Question Loose

Funny you should mention it. My left mirror ALWAYS flips back when I hammer it! The right one has never moved. On normal accel- all is well. Cant get the left one to tighten up . Easy to "thumb" it back when done the hole shot tho. The nature of the beast I guess?
Things could be worse?? Gonna need new ones soon anyway. The chrome/ plastic went south a while back. I painted the backs black & they look OK for now. I am still looking for the lower mirrors - like in Officer & Gentleman. Will make using the cover MUCH easier & smooth the looks! Let me know if anyone can find such a thing?

Good Info

I'm going to try those suggestions tonight.

I'd just like to say that I wasn't expecting such quick and numerous responses.

Same here. I finally took them off the other day and fitted a single barend convex mirror. I can see more with that little 2.5" mirror than I could with the two stockers.

What Chadderbox said ...

... is correct, cheap, quick and solves the problem.

You cannot tighten the mirrors enough to stop them moving because the screw bottoms out before the mirror is tight enough.

Remove one of the mirrors, put the little springy washer in your pocket and go to a hardware store with a decent selection of stainless steel metric hardware. Buy two split-ring lockwashers that are the same size as the washer in your pocket. The inside diameter is important and should match. The replacement lockwasher is a standard size and should be substantially thicker than the original washer.

Reassemble, using the new washers in place of the old ones. Make sure that each washer sits around the small collar or shoulder; you'll see what I mean when you have it in front of you.

At this point, you should be able to tighten the mirrors enough that they won't move.

My mirrors used to do this too. Another vote for the big washer solution from me. Never had any more trouble.
