Question Advice on shim, air hole, restrictor plate?

First post - this forum is incredibly informative!

I have an 08 Bonneville Black (600 miles); post break-in service with the following:

D&d pipes
128 mains, 42 pilot- 2.75 turns?
AI and Snorkel removed
K&n air filter.

I have NOT added a Bellmouth, removed the Restrictor Plate, shimmed, or drilled the air hole for the slide.

I have read everything I could find about these mods, but there doesnt seem to be a agreement as to whether the above are really positive- and some are irreversible......

The bike runs pretty darn well. Maybe a little bogged down in the mid-range, but wow what a difference from stock.

Anybody have a similar setup or have advice on what to do next? I will go to pods when the warranty is up, but until then - any advice to shorten the learning curve would be great. thanks.

Dont drill the slide you dont need to you can shim and change springs to see what works once you drill the slides you cant go back.Dont waste your money on cheap air box mods .Get rid of the box and put pod filters on you will want to later anyway cause thats where the hp is.

airbox

I agree on the airbox for sure. I just removed my buddies on Saturday. I gave it a little test ride on surface streets and was very impressed. Throttle response and engine sound was great. This is why I opted for Unifoam instead of K&N replacing my stock filter. Why pay the extra bucks when I'm gonna need K&N pods in a year or less.

Try removing the restrictor plate in the airbox. It's reversable and fairly easy if you unbolt the box so it can move around a little. Then remove the right side and the plate will slide right out.

I think (but don't know) the 128 is a bit rich with the restrictor plate still in. On my very similar setup (see sig) a shim made my midrange too rich. All my tuning was done in cool weather and I am pleased with the results. Come summer with temps and humidity in the 90s all bets are off. Might be 125/40 then.

Pods are good but I'm keeping the airbox 'cause it's cheaper and so much stuff hangs on it.

Good luck

Thanks, that's just the info I was looking for.....I will try the plate first, but probably wont be able to wait for a year to do the pods!

05 Thruxton
EPCO megas
unifilter
Polaris bellmouth
AI removed
125 mains
40 pilots
2.5 turns
1 shim
slide hole drilled

plug color is grey
runs without a "hiccup", a few "pops" on the overrun when cold
seems to work for me
may try to remove the baffle in the airbox next but do not want to screw up the midrange which is were I live most of the time

sounds like a shim and 125's maybe in my future. I agree with you that I dont want to loose any midrange.

My bike jumps like a scared monkey btwn 50 and 85+. Not as quick btwn 20-50. Does that mean I am too rich with the pilots? or mains?
