Need advise / coil options

Hi folks,

If you read the other thread I posted yesterday you might know that my reliable bonnie died on me. I think I have eliminated every possible problem and have narrowed it down to a crappy coil.

I checked the tank for sediment, the inline filter in the fuel line, the compression, plugs, plug wires etc...etc...

Looks as though the ohm reading on the secondary side of the coil is far below spec and jumping around also.

I need a new coil, my local dealer wants $135.00 for one. I see that newbonneville sells a Nology one for $75.00. Are there any other options that I should know about ?

Thanks as always.
Jed

Jed, good looking bike!

I had a coil fail on my Bonnie at 700 miles, so far my Scrambler has been trouble free. Those are the only two options that I know about and I have been leaning towards the Noligy and keep the stock as a spare so I will be anxious to see if there are other options.

Hey ice,

If you return to this thread......what were the symptoms of the bad coil ?

I believe the German made PVL 356100 coil is actually what Nology re-badge and sell as their Profire for the Bonnie. It is sold by PVL as a replacement for the Bosch coils fitted to R series BMW bikes with twin plug heads (they use a coil for each head). I've got one of these on my bike and it was certainly a lot cheaper than buying a coil from Triumph or importing a Nology from the US (couldn't find a UK supplier). This is a link to a UK supplier but you might be able to find a US supplier of BMW spares who will do a good price. It's item 70506 near the bottom of the page.

If you click on the photo a new window with a larger version will open up. Then compare it with this one on British Custom's site and you'll notice the strange similarity!

PVL, unlike Nology, make no high performance claims for this coil, but it works on my bike at least as well as the OEM coil did.

I think you're right, but Nology's publicity suggests otherwise! Maybe I'm just a cynic.

My bike has a Nology...and I picked up 15 HP at the rear wheel!!!!!!

Then I woke up.....and realized that my bike ran the same as it did with the stock coil.

I have the Nology coil and wires with the iridium plugs and picked up 18hp but that's because I have the Bonneville Special Black Edition!
