Hella replacement headlight

Just replaced the stock headlight insert with a high-performace Hella item.

http://db.hella.com.au/cgi-bin/catal...ew&flmaint=822

This is an H4 headlight for countries where you drive on the left but there would be an equivalent for others.

The headlight has a metal reflector and the quality of the reflector and lens seem far superior to the stock item. I bought it for AU$90 hoping for the best without really knowing whether it would fit. The mounting locators and rubber boot look quite a bit different to stock. However, it all fitted perfectly. The only points to note were that the pilot/parking light holder was a little loose in the Hella reflector and the rubber boot had to be cut to allow the wires from this bulb to pass through it. A couple of winds of electrical tape around the bulb holder snugged it up nicely.

At a glance it looks the same as the stock item, that is until you turn it on. Nice bright beam with good distribution to the sides and the cut-off point (to avoid blinding others) is nice and sharp.

I had already gone to an H4 bulb on the stock headlight. Back then it improved the colour of the light they it was not hugely brighter than the stock bulb, thanks to the limitations of the stock reflector and lens. Switching over to the Hella, I used the same H4 bulb and it certainly is noticeably brighter. You don't want to look directly into that thing at close range!

Here we say "häh?" (read what?) Ain´t the headlight always H4 stock or is there some differences between bikes in US and Europe. I had/still have H4 headlight with H4 bulb stock and no modifications made!

Have I misunderstood something???

H4 is the fitting type a 3 pronged bulb. Mine had a H4 as standard. the bulb was a standard 55w so i changed that straight away to a 100.

Question Head Lamp

My replacement xenon bulb is holding up this time - so far? It could be a LOT better tho!
I really liked the setup posted here a week or so ago w/ the 2 running lamps on a hand made bracket!! Havent seen a headlight that really did the trick yet! I think I will try a similar rep of the running lights w/ help from Kirk catalog. Looked nice & he said really lit up the road. Bud w/ BA had a fact setup that did nicely! The Bonne is somewhat different!
Will keep all posted on what I wind up using. A cool challenge. I originally had a plan to make a bracket that fit on the horn mount area. It woulda looked nice - but had to be too wide to clear the wheel on a turn. Will see?

Hella replacement reflector

I upgraded the bulb to a Sylvania Silverstar. Some improvement but not enough to stop looking for more light. Thanks for the tip about the reflector options..I will look into the price....

The Hellas in my photo album may not be the best looking aux light set-up, they do make for plenty of light.

Thanks again for the reflector info!

Hi all, new to forum and just browsing around when I saw this thread. So you want more light?

Have you tried HID (High Intensity Discharge). Fitted this to my T100 and the amount of light is stunning.

The unit is an H4 replacement with a solenoid on the back of it, hence the additional control box. This solenoid moves a built in reflector to give you both Dipped beam and High beam. Just brilliant

Worked out at just over £30 for the kit. Must admit though it took me several weeks to figure out how best to fit it. Here's a link to the supplier:
