Tach Problem
I have an o6 bonnie black and bought the Triumph tach set up. Install was easy. The problem I have is when cruising at one stable speed when the tach is at 4000 or 5000 the needle seems to wig out. It will flucuate about 500 rpms and I'm not slowing down or acceclerating, just staying at one speed. Is this normal for the needle to float around at high rpm's. Can't imagine this is right. Tach seems fine at idle and when accelerating from a stop, goes right to redline no problem and hits rev limiter,so I know it's accurate. Seems like it;s getting some kind of surge at high rpms. Any advice would help. Thanks everybody.

I've noticed something similar. I just installed a tach on my 08 last week and have noticed that while accellerating moderately at around 4500 the needle tends to pause there a moment before continuing. I don't really notice any pause in in the sound of the engine rpm but just on the tach. Is it just a flat spot in the rpm range? I have yet to wind it up to redline yet but everything seems fine so far.

I don't know if I have a bad tach or something else isn't right. Tach just seems to jump around at high rpms. Checked all connections and everything is tight, also checked battery connections everything is good. Staying at steady speed and tach needle fluctuates back and forth like it's getting some kind of electrical spike. I don't know weird.

My 2007 T100 tach does that. I rode a friend's 2007 Bonnie Black with the Triumph tach installed - his did it. So... if it isn't "normal", we can at least say it is very common...

I wouldn't like to say it's normal either, but it certainly is a common fault frequently reported here. I've had two tachos on my T100 and they've both done it to some extent. The current one seems to have stopped doing it for some reason, but now reads consistently higher than it (or the previous one) used to for any given road speed instead! Some people have reported success eliminating the problem by running a direct feed to the tacho from the ignition coil, but I've not tried it myself.

Mine does it too, around 4000 or a little higher. I've got used to it, especially after finding out that many of them do it.

I have a new 08 Bonniville Black (600 miles)with the factory tach option installed. The accuracy of these instrument is really disappointing. On 45 degree mornings the speedo howls loudly and zooms to an indicated 100mph while at 3000 rpm. I have a great dealer, told him and he is ording a new speedo. I have not had time to drive the 50 miles to the dealer to get in swapped out but I have been paying more attention to speedo and tach RPM. While the speedo is clearly bad the tach seems to wander around 300 to 500 rpm while holding a steady speed...by ear, I admit. It is also clear that the tach is hughely inaccurate and worst inconsistant. Just for grins I'm going to hook up my GPS and get a common reading.
Bottom line the instruments on my new 08 Bonnie are crap.
If you are buying a Black, don't waste the money on the factory tach, get something better after market.

Thanx everybody for chiming in. I feel better that I'm not the only one claiming this problem. Hopefully the floating needle will clear up on its own. Until then something I'll have to deal with till it really pisses me off and I return it for a new one. Everyone knows what a hassle that is. I hate installing thing twice. Especially after spending the extra money on a factory part.

i have recently started to have this problem but it has seemed to get worse. it started with some minor 100-300 rpm "sweeps" a couple of months ago and now i'm noticing 500 or more sweeps at times. the worst was on sunday when i was doing the ton++++ and it was swinging all the way to 8500!!!
