Taking the Pelicans for a Ride..or...How a Poor Boy Affords Hard Cases

Simple and Sweet,

I wanted bomb proof hard luggage for my commuter bike. I carry my laptop everywhere with me along with other valuable stuff. I wanted it completely water proof and secured.

I bought two new Pelican 1500 cases off the interweb.

I made the brackets. They are very sturdy to say the least.

This setup is very economical and keeps the width of the bike narrower than the handlebars for that slim profile. Pelican cases are warranted forever, unconditionally. The specs say I could put 58 pounds in each of them and they'd still float.

Pics make the exhaust look closer than it is in real life.

I will remount the turn signals tomorrow when I get home from work.

Sweat, I ordered the Pelicans from some place in San Antone. They are a huge company and literally thousands of places sell them. I just googled Pelican cases and shopped around.

They come in 39 different sizes and configurations, from Ipod holders all the way to casket size. Typically, gun guys or photographers use them for transport of their prized toys. We use them on our fire trucks to keep valuable stuff safe in hazardous conditions.

The size I bought was something like 80 bucks each. I overpayed a bit though to order from the place in San Antone. I ordered at 2 pm Tuesday and the UPS man knocked on my door at 10 am Wednesday morning. I could have saved a bit by shopping elsewhere, but not next day delivery.

Pelican-case.com is where I ordered from.

I'll try for the bracket and interior pics. Stand by.

Here are the inside pics:

I can't seem to get a decent shot of the brackets.

All I did was use 1 inch wide, 1/8" thick flat strap.
I built a rear bracket off the two bolt holes under the back of the seat on each side.
For the front brackets, I built a strap from to upper shockmount to the passenger rear peg holes.

They are crazy strong though. I could lay the bike onto it's side and the brackets won't bend.

I can't take credit here though. This is not my new idea. The ADVrider guys have been using these for paniers for long time now. I just made them work on a Bonnie

Well done man, those cases look great. Where most hard cases I've seen look bulbous to me, those look "just right".
