Gear noise?

It seems from the answer to my other question that most of or all the T-100 trannys have a gear whine under load. So my next question is this does it lesson with mileage or stay the same? Does thicker or synthetic oil quiet them at all?

Several people said just add loud pipes and you wont notice it as much, i like the somewhat louder pipe idea but there should be some way of getting the tranny to make less noise. I know all old brit bikes had quirks so i expected the new ones to have a few also as do most bikes no matter where there made. The old bikes did not have gear whine though. Any one have a quiet tranny on there new Trumpets?

the old bikes had better pipes these things stock are so quiet you can hear everything.

Whine

They all do it. As said, the new engines are quiet so it more noticable. I gutted my stockers (pipes) & it helps some. I DONT want ultra loud pipes so I will put up w/ a minor whine. Not that bad! Stone stock bike- the gears is all youll hear!! I want SOME exhaust sound. The gutted stockers are rite on sound wise. Sound like an old 60's stock Bonne- I like it!!

Thanks Capt D, my brief time on here i have already learned your the man for precise answers other than just opinions. So heres another question, i have ridden 2 Americas and did not notice the gear noise, could it be the different crank configuration or did i just miss the whine, they had stock pipes.

Have you or anyone else tried synthnetic oil or higher visc gear oil. Do these engines share the oil with the tranny or is it seperate? My experience with Japanese bikes BMWs and Old Nortons is the trannys shift better with syn. oil and are quieter. Same thing applies for the engines.

Oil & Whine

Thanks for the compliment Drifter!!! I am not so sure its all that. There ara many well informed people here w/ good answers to hard questions!! Yes the engine & tranny share the same oil un like A HD that has them seperate in a lot of models. #2 Yes you should use high quality synthetic motorcycle oil! I hadent reqally noticed the lack or lesser whine on the BA? It could very well have to do w/ the 270 deg crank & the way the counter ballancers operate accordingly.The whine on the 360 motor almost seems to be related to the counter balancers? Either way - its nothing to worry about since they all seem to have it. Really doesnt sound that noticable while cruising w/ other than with the overly restricted stock pipes. Then its ALL you hear!!
Make sure you use a synthetic oil made for wet clutches, or youll be hearing the sound of a slipping clutch!! Good luck & ride safe!!
