Angry OMG it's another Lucas tail light post

Received my NB Lucas tail light kits in the post today [the one without the indicators] http://www.newbonneville.com/html/bo...taillight.html which was pretty **** fast... I have a good few hours of daylight left I went out to fit it to my Scrambler.
I tried to remove the fender with the correct tool but i think it might be a bit cheep as the rear two bolts destroyed the head [bolts seem ok...i hope!, hardware shop in the morning to get a new one] So I tried to fit the light with the fender in situ.

Now here is the problem, the top bolt is too long, the bolts and spacers for the bottom bolts are too long, one of the bottom bolts is only threaded half way, while the other is fully threaded.

:

It's on, but i need to take another look at it tomorrow to figure out what I have done wrong, or what will need shortening.

: to top it all off i now have man Flumonia, so Im off to bed :

Can anybody explain what i did wrong, or its my kit incorrect?

Correct tool?

Did you use a star socket head screw driver or an allen key?
An allen key will stip a star socket out in one simple twist.

Hmmm, that is kinda weird. I ordered the same kit about 2-3 months ago and ran into the complete opposite problem. I had to go out and get longer screws because the ones that came with the light were just a tad to short. Maybe Brent put longer ones in the light box to try to fix that? I went and bought (working off memory here so might not be right) 20mm lenght bolts and that worked fine for me. They have alittle extra but no where near where the tire would be. Just make sure it is on and the rubber is tight all way around and you should be fine. The light body itself isn't the exact shape of the fender, at least what I could tell but pretty close. I tightened it to where there looked to be a nice seal all the way around the said it is good.

tail light

You guys have convinced me that the OEM tail light is fine.
Everyone reckons it is ugly but f*** it's not that bad. I reckon it looks OK.
At least it fits perfectly and wont rust or need to be regularly polished.
Its contemporary. Talk about ugly, what about T140 tail lights!
Just deal with the lights that came with the bike and stop trying to compare with "the good OLD days"!

I don't know about the good old days, but the saggy-pants plastic StarTrek lights that come stock were "dealt with" by being thrown in the dumpster within hours of coming home from the dealership.

If going and getting three 80 cent screws is too much, then maybe the stock lights are a good way to go. As for me, again... it was a simple mod and I love the way it came out. There is hole on the bottom of the fender for the stock light just like the aftermarket one. I reused that same spot for the Lucas light with no issues. The bend difference in not seen with the rubber boot, so one would never know.

Edit: Also remember that this is NOT the bolt-on KIT with the precut wires w/plugs attached. If you wanted an easier 1-2-3 type install that would be the better choice. I didn't have the extra loot sitting around at the moment so I went with doing the extras myself.

I ventured out to the shed again this morning [my temp hitting boiling point] I'm a man after all, what's a bit of flue when motorcycles are involved.

Armed with my new better quality star tool i successfully removed the rear fender, and striped down my previous days efforts, and looked at what I had. One thing is for sure my two bottom bolts are longer the 20 mm, more like 40 mm, so long in-fact I had to use a longer depth socket to bolt them up. The spacer are also too long, If I has used them at their current length, I would never of been able to tighten them up without leaving a 5m gap between the fender and the washer.

I shortened everything a wee bit, which solved a few issues, the light is back on again looking great, my only gripe is the fit of the two bottom bolts. The original rubber washers are being pushed out by a small amount, I think I may of shortened the spacers a little too much.

Doe's anybody know if the Scrambler rear fender is different from the standard Bonne?

Im happy considering this part was never made to fit this bike, at a later date I want to get the MAS aluminum fenders, but I have not idea what the fit will be like on those beauties.

and as for

good job Triumph didn't take that advice

With the front indicators, how do people connect them to the OEM connectors?, I don't want to hack up the loom or the original indicator, any Ideas?

You are going to have to cut wires. But if you cut the wires between plugs and the old lights you can reuse the plugs/connectors. You will have a good amount of extra wire though. I ended up cutting alot off so I didn't have to stuff it anywhere... now if I decide to go with something else down the road who knows if that was a good idea or not.

'Bella Corsa' offer OEM connectors that you can crimp on to your new indicators. That way you won't have to cut the original wires. Just in case you ever want to sell the bike, and a prospective buyer wants to put the originals back on.

If you're talking about those awfull plastic things sticking out either side of the bike, the only reason Iv'e put up with them so far (a whole fortnight) is I haven't found anything good enough to replace them with (other than nothing at all). Cops around here would have you in a second if you took your signal lights off. Mounting different signal lights is another issue. That's why I was looking at replacing the StarTrek tail light as well.
