Brake pad limit alarm

5000 miles, rear brake alarm went off. Sounds a bit like a freight train coming to a stop. What's the life span of the brakepads on your bikes?

Yes, I should have checked earlier and no, I don't feather the pedal all the time. Had a long holiday run with a heavy (over)load on board .

:Thieu.
YES I installed new ones at the front too!

Brakes

My rear pads lasted rite on 5000 mi! They had 1/16" left on them & I knew they were commin close. Backed the ole girl outa the garage one day & one side pad just fell off! Then it was metal on metal! Replaced them w/ sintered pads. Doin good now. The fronts have @ 50% left- plenty of wear grooves left. Was a shocker to have the remaining part fall off!! I figure looking @ them now they will last @ least 5000 mi +?

Foot

I got about the same out of mine the first 5,000 mi.. I thought that was strange until I realized that I had a tendency to rest my foot on the pedal. Adjusted the pedal to prevent it and now use the front brake most of the time.

I have lots of life left on my originals, front and back, at 8500 miles, I just inspected them. I suppose that I'm easy on them!

A couple of years ago...there were LOTS of threads about the rear brakes wearing out VERY quickly. I think they are made out of butter or something....

Rear Brakes

Buter sounds about rite! I figure the sintered pads are more like margerine? Or crisco?

Mine lasted 5000 miles and when I took the bike in for a weeping cam gasket repair I had the 6000 mile service done and got a call that my rear breaks were on metal but no damage to rotor. Now I make sure foot is to the side of brake pedal

Question Brakes

Never really use my rear brake much @ 1st. Then told about cupping w pinky ft brake. started usingthe rear. The ft tire is pretty well cupped! Gonna tryto make it last till the rear ready again? Good tread- bad cupping tho! Will see? Sintered pads seem to be wearing better than the butter cup stock ones!! Never had a pad just fall off before!!

Are the pads a hassle to change on your Bonnie's or a piece of cake? Just curious...

I replaced my pads at 13,000 because I was bored and still had 50% left. I wonder what it is about bikes that makes some go through pads more than others? I bought my pads at the dealership and assume we all use the same kind of pads....a semi-metallic or something.
