Question Coasting?

Just wondering... I've shifted into neutral, shut down the engine and coasted for miles down gentle (and not so gentle) dirt roads. I do this while up in the hills glassing for mule deer and just enjoying the mountains. The Scrambler feels like a big, but sure-footed mountain bike with lots of weight and prodigious brakes...

Am I hurting the bike any by coasting downhill for miles, without the engine running?

It sure is nice and quiet.

Thanks, Guy

Question Coasting

Not for short distances. I wouldnt want to do it down a 15-20 mi mountain road tho. Not sure that would be real safe either!!

I cant see how your hurting the bike coasting but its something I would not feel comfortable with theres a lot of weight and momentum in the bike and haveing the gearbox and power on tap can come in handy.

Even though you have "shut it down," actual real-life friction with the clutch and transmission, and all, is still in place, so there's got to be "reverse" rub going on in there. In the long run, that can't be good...

The Triumph Owners Manual for my Thruxton specifically say NO, DON'T DO IT! - something about something not being lubricated if the motor aint running.

Talking

Sounds like fun.

I must agree regarding with proper lube bathing all the gears, thus a running engine.

I'd like to take my SM on some back wood's cut-lines and throw it around in the dirt like my old Yammy enduro. Get it all muddy and such and then post the experience.

Maybe I need a Scrambler instead ?

Stay tuned...

Question

OK this one caught my attention.

If the motor isn't running, the bike is in neutral and you are coasting, then the engaged clutch could possibly be turning some gears in the gear box.

What if you held the clutch lever in?

Brett.

....never coast on a motorcycle....it is power that controls the machine....makes you go....sets you up for fun and for getting out of trouble....time is everthing!
