Thruxton TORS sound excellent!
Hello groupies...I'm a long-time admirer of the Thruxton and finally bought a new one 2 weeks ago! I love the bike already, and I immediately delved into the various threads on mufflers, jetting, air filters, exhaust pipes & bluing, air-injection and carburetion mods so...I knew what I had to do...it was WAY too quiet!!! This website is awesome!
First step was to watch the video (sticky) of the 5 twins with various mufflers. I loved the Epco & Predator but they seemed a bit too loud for my taste. I liked the Triumph TOR's (Triumph Off Roads) and I know they don't offer the tuning and HP capabilities of the more open (louder) pipes, but I just got 'em today for a good price from an ebay seller and put them on.
All I have done as of today is pull the snorkel, remove the AI, and put the TORS on. This is a California bike, and it actually runs great, with a very smooth idle, no backfiring or popping, and good drivability.
The BEST part...it sounds like a Triumph twin of old! I particularly like the deep rumble at idle, and when you take off at partial throttle, just rolling it on, short-shifting (I have to...still breaking her in!) it just sounds great. Not enough to piss off my neighbors, but just enough to make me grin widely.
The fit and finish is superb....they bolted on in 15 minutes, and look just like the handsome stock pipes. Also, at 75 mph, you can just hear them (no ear plugs) but it's very pleasant...not too extreme, mostly due to wind noise. I'm sure the cars around you on the freeway can hear you though!
So...if any of your are 'on the fence' about mufflers, let me say, my first impression of the TORS is excellent. If you can get a good deal on them go for it!
My next step is a Unifilter in the stock airbox (for now) and a Dyno-Jet rejet kit to bump up the horsepower a bit.
If anybody has questions about the pipes let me know. I plan on making a video or audio clip from a short ride available soon. Most of the other ride videos I have heard have way too much wind noise and distortion to actually hear the pipes. I have a few ways of eliminating most of that noise.
Cheers,
Brian Light

Cool! That seems like what I want - a little more tone, without being obnoxious. Glad you like 'em.

The idle sound is particularly wonderful...a deep bass. I looked all over the internet for 2 weeks and none of the videos/audios did the TOR's any justice!
You will really like their sound. It's like the old "3 Bears" tale, "too soft", "too hard", ahhh, "Just Right"
I can't wait to go for a nice ride down Hwy 1 tomorrow or Saturday to log some extra break-in miles!
Cheers,
BKL

Congrats on the Thrux, Brian, and welcome to the forum. I have TORS on my Speedie and they're a nice compromise between volume and tone.
You may want to do the filter and dynojet at the same time as you'll be running lean if you just do the filter. You're possibly running lean now if you didn't adjust the carb screws when you fitted the pipes. Just a thought.

Hmmm, sorry to hear one of your TORS is rotting! Seems like an isolated case, eh? You probably should pick up some Epcos or StainTunes. They are pretty LOUD, but they are well built, and stainless steel to last forever. As a side bonus, they should offer more HP potentially since there is less restriction than with the TORS.
My Honda CB750 K1 OEM pipes have been in service for 37 years and still look great! The old Honda chrome is not famous for being all that good, but it has survived without rusting. I live in California...lots of sunny warm, dry weather might make a difference here too.
Cheers mate,

I ordered a pair of EPCOs as I know Tom makes a great product. I hope they're not too l loud because I really do enjoy the tone of the TORS
I looked at the "rotten" muffler again. I don't think it's rotting or rusting through from the inside. I just think that the chrome was not applied correctly. Maybe the chrome won't come off. I am going to keep an eye on it and if they appear to be sound I will try to sell them here or on eBay

Hey drlapo...please post your riding impressions with your new Epcos. Just a seat of the pants thing. I know "loud" is subjective, a personal judgement, and if you're happy with the Epco sound level compared to TORS let us all know please!
Cheers,
blight

TORs
I've had the TORs on for a little more than a year and I love them. I thought about the Predators but I hear them online and they seemed too loud. I recently installed my own version of the airbox removal kit and rejetted the carbs to 140 jets and a shim under each needle. They got a little louder and more throaty; perfect.
